I often wonder which future toys may have come out of the Project SWORD and SpaceX ranges in the Sixties and early Seventies if the companies had continued.
We know Tri-ang had plans for three more SpaceX toys - like the Rocket Transporter - [read all about them on Paul V's uber-cool site http://www.triangspacextoys.info/SpGAtoys/RTrs/SpLTRTrs.html]
But what if WE had been responsible for more SpaceX toy designs!
One potential SpaceX contender that caught my eye was the Mars and Venus Flyby vehicle. I like it because it 's very old school NASA and a possible kitbash between existing SpaceX toys like the ATS and the Lunar Orbitor!
Then again it might be too similar to these toys and have been branded boring by young SpaceX fans! Its hard being a toy designer!

Maybe some of the UK's missile and rocket projects at the time like the Black Knight may have tapped into kids' zest for zooming objects. These projects were often featured in comics like Look and Learn.
Another SpaceX contender and space age object I personally loved and still do is the Skylon, the metal structure towering over the Festival of Britain in the Fifties.
As a Sixties SpaceX toy idea it may have been just too old and perhaps overly fiddly. Then again Biro the pen people made a model so maybe it might have worked!
Which designs would you put forward readers?
Wow, Woodsy, that Skylon biro is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThe Skylon itself must've been a marvel to behold, but what a wonderful souvenir.
I dread to think what one of those would cost nowadays, assuming you'd find one, so I'll happily content myself with my SpaceX rocket pen, which, although a very minor player, is still in the same ballpark as the Skylon biro at least

As to your question, would I -wish- to know what models they had in store to continue the Spacex range. And just imagine they'd've started a Spacex III series with another dozen or so new toys - aargh! :) And other than real-life space projects, I'm pretty sure the pages of TV21 would've easily yielded another number of very attractive toy designs.
One correction if I may: the three toys you refer to (Rocket Transporter, Crash Tender and Freighter/Salvage Craft) will very probably have been produced instead of being future additions. All were listed on card backs, and the Rocket Transporter was advertised in comics as well. The trade advert announcing the later three larger toys (LEM Apollo, Soyuzes and Photonic Station) actually states the range comprised 37 items at that point, which to my mind is proof they were available then.
Best -- Paul
Yes Paul, I agree, I would have loved to have seen the Skylon back in the Fifties and the whole Festival of Britain I reckon. Our attempt at a Worlds Fair! My parents may have been as I have a Skylon postcard in our family photos box passed down to me. I recall seeing a documentary a while back about someone's mission to track down the skylon, derelict, forlorn and split apart as it was.
DeleteYeah, TV21 would have been a goldmine for even more SpaceX and possibley SWORD toys for sure.
Well I guess its just a matter of time before we see the SpaceX Three on your site then! Fingers crossed!
