Super Cycle Streamers

Do you remember bike streamers like these readers?

They attached to the handlebars and streamed out as you pelted down the hill on your chopper, streaming like a shoal of eels in the sun.

Further bike coolness could be had from spoke smackers, those bits of card pegged onto your wheel that clattered as they turned.

Happy days on the saddle.

Like Riding a Bike!

This is my Missus' big and lovely Holland bike, which we brought back from Germany this year.

Needing some attention a very kind vintage bike enthusiast tuned it up for free for us.

Here it is parked up prior to it's maiden voyage earlier this week.

Interestingly for Brits, the main brake is activated by pedalling backwards!

The only remaining job is to repair the light wiring and dynamo, but there's no hurry.

The Bowden Spacelander

Hi Woodsy, this is in reference to Miss Moonbase Jr's Schwinn trike. I've owned a few beach cruisers and super choppers and a number of my friends have had similar collections, however all of us agree that if we had the cash to splash we would get one of these babies!!!!!! 

Look at the price!

You Schwinn Again

This is Little Miss Moonbases's new Schwinn trike. 

Second hand, it was a bargain at £20. Just needed it's tyres inflating and a quick polish.

The back footboard is just fab and it's overall retro styling reminds of America's Radio Flyer cart.

BIKE STREAMERS!

 

What a blast from the saddled past, cycle streamers! Yes! I had these on my bike, catching the wind from the handlebars as I zoomed down the streets in the Sixties. This is the first packet I've seen since. Unsure how mine were bought, maybe loose from a rack in a cycle shop.

WHAT A MICKEY MOUSE TRIKE!

I was amazed at the effort toy designers had gone to making this bike I saw on Todocolleccion.

There's an entire Mickey Mouse fishtank attached the handlebars. In fact Mickey gets a front seat view of the driveway. he looks like he's on a space mission!

Bicycles and Ricicles

It's bank holiday Monday - for first of May - here in the UK. Overcast and dull. Still the Gkids are having fun. Breakfast was lucky charms and ricicles and toast with Dutch Hagel and cheese.

Junior has a new bike with pedals and stabilisers. Did you have one like that?

COFFEE, CORGI AND ACTION MEN: GROUNDS FOR CONCERN?

Just suppin some Sunday coffee and glancing at the Andrew Marr morning show on British TV. Couldn't help noticing the red and orange striped rectangle at the rear. It totally reminded me of an accessory I had for my Action Man as a kid but I can't think what!

We never really talk about Action Man much on the blog. Funny that. He was personally a constant companion throughout the 60's and early 70's and I probably played with him and his military mates more than anything else!  I know we focus on space toys at Moonbase - oh and the occasional bit of archaeology [sorry Bill!] - but I wonder how popular Action Man/ GI Joe/ Adventure Team were and are with readers? Drop us a line.

The Tour de France is riding through my adopted home of Yorkshire as we speak. Its a big deal and thousands are out to see the cyclists whizz through the quaint villages and towns of England's biggest County. Alas, I'm not one for speed cycling, which is so popular in the UK. I prefer the slow everyday pushbiking you see in Holland and Denmark. However, I did have this Corgi Tour de France die-cast toy car set as a kid and it was quite beautiful. Did you have one readers?

Oddly enough I do have this plastic toy cyclist in my possession these days. He's part of my JR Toys collection and a lovely thing too. 

Anyhoo, time for another cuppa. If any of you are watching the Tour De France or admiring your GI Joe collection, consider this question to which I do not know the answer: did Action Man/ GI Joe ever have a bicycle?

BIKE SPOKE FLICKERS

When I was a kid me and my mates used to attach cardboard flickers to our bikes' tyre spokes. Why did we do this? To make a load of noise of course!

The flickers were bits of folded card usually from an old cereal box. The easiest way of attaching them to the wheels were clothes pegs nicked off the line. Thinking about it I'm now unsure exactly where we attached our flicker units. I think it may have been the front and rear wheel forks pictured below?
