Chris Boucher RIP

I wanted to mark the sad passing yesterday of the writer Chris Boucher.

He wrote some 70's Doctor Who, including the sublime 'Robots of Death', was script editor for all of Blake's 7 and created Star Cops.

He consequently had a massive effect on my life. His characterisation and dialogue was the best.

Rest in peace.

MORE STAR COPS PROPS!

Hi,

Had a bit more luck adding to my Star Cops collection. These are items that I think were made for the show but probably didn't get used. 

A set of patches that would've been worn on uniforms and a couple of vinyl graphics that were for the sets, one for the Ronald Reagan, the main American station and one for Hanimed, a medical company that one of the characters worked for before being recruited by the Star Cops.

THE NASA MOON CHARIOT

Hi Woodsy,

I hope all is well at Moonbase Central. After the terrible news from Britain, things are still quiet in NZ. We are up to 708 cases, with just one death so far, which was on Sunday.

I have been enjoying all the posts, and just saw the one on Kev's Star Cops Sketches. The Moon Buggy reminded me of a model by Matchbox. 

It is the NASA S.E.V./Chariot. Model number MB1080, this came out in 2018. 

While it is not identical, it is also a six-wheeler, with a large cab - only the port side has an airlock. 

The white crew compartment is metal, while the gold base is plastic. The wheels have gold hubs, and the windows are tinted blue. This seems to be based on a real NASA design, although rather simplified. 

Still a very nice model, Matchbox have never had many space or SF models in their standard toy line. 

The backing card shows the vehicle traversing rocky terrain, with various desert plants in the background - presumably this depicts the vehicle under test in the US, rather than on the Moon or Mars.

READERS' ART: KEV'S STAR COPS SKETCHES

Hi,

As requested, here are some of the sketches I did years ago to illustrate a couple of Star Cops fanzines which were written by Chris Boucher, who created the show.

Sorry for the poor quality of the photos, they were shot on my phone, in a hurry!

Pictures are: 

1. The Moonbase logo, worn by anyone who worked on Moonbase, 
2. A moon buggy, 
3. Nathan Spring, the hero
4. The boss of the American space station (the chap behind the desk).

I did loads, but this gives you an idea.

kev's lego star cops

Hi,

Proving yet again, the dangers of early retirement, I have just made a lego model of the main characters from Star Cops! 

From left to right, Theroux, Spring, Shoun, Kenzy and Devis.

Still, it is probably the excitement of discovering that Big Finish are to do a new season (in audio) of Star Cops next year. 31 years later!

kev's original Star Cops Space Station prop

I have managed to add another original item to my Star Cops collection. 

This is (as far as I know), the only surviving piece of the large filming model of the Charles de Gaulle space station. 

The station was the main European station, seen in several episodes of the series. 

It is the HQ of the Star Cops for a bit, until the commander realises he's always throwing up in zero g so moves everyone to the moon!

MORE STAR COPS PROPS FROM KEVIN DAVIES

 

 

Hi,

Not as exciting as my other Star Cops costumes but here are two more originals from the series. Both are background character technicians, one from Moonbase, the central Lunar colony where admin, research and commercial activity takes place.

 

 

The Star Cops HQ is on the moon too (because the hero keeps getting sick in zero G!) The other from the main American space station, The Ronald Reagan, which is so impressive it has a spinning section to create 'artificial gravity'.

 

 

There are no Star Cops on the US station because the State Department doesn't like the idea of them!

KEVIN D'S ORIGINAL STAR COPS LASER PROP

"Hi, here are photos of my Star Cops original laser prop. In the series, they never say what the red/ green buttons do. Star Cops went for realism, so when they fire the gun there is just a brief flash from the muzzle (the electronics are in this prop) and the victim dies as if shot with a bullet. There is no beam. The prop does have a set of switches and a 7-segment LED display in the rear, presumably for that function."

Thought you might be interested in this. I am a massive fan of the 1987 BBC2 series 'Star Cops' (yes, it possibly is just me), I have been lucky enough to acquire the odd original costume from the series but so far they have been of background characters.


However, I am now the proud owner of the uniform worn by the hero of the series, Commander Nathan Spring, head of the International Space Police Force (nicknamed in contempt by the press as 'Star Cops', but a phrase that so caught on that our heroes use it to describe themselves). David Calder played the character in all 9 episodes of the show. (BBC2 1987).


Well, I'm very pleased with it anyway!
