Not sure I would have seen this in 1977. I was 16 and Heavy Metal Kung Fu mad. Besides, our family had stuff going on that year, but you may have seen this segment.

Did you make an Advent Wreath?

It the first of Advent today and I was recently talking to a mate about making the Blue Peter Advent wreath  based on what Valerie, Peter and John made earlier! ( Blue Peter was a 1960's and 70's UK kids TV show).

I'm pretty sure it was made from two coathangers somehow joined in the middle with tinsel wrapped round it 

I've no idea now how the candles were fixed but maybe they were just placed in the four gaps. 

Was the whole thing rested on a plate or something?

Candles and tinsel seem a bit flammable to me now! 

Did you make one readers or anything else home-made for Advent or Christmas? Snowmen, candles, sweet boxes, lanterns, cards?

Biddy Baxter and Ray Brooks RIP

Biddy Baxter

I  saw on the news that Biddy Baxter has sadly passed away. It was the first time I recall seeing what she looked like but I remember her name so vividly from the end credits of Blue Peter. There she was every week.

Blue Peter was essential TV for me as a kid like many of my generation. My Blue Peter team were the iconic threesome of Peter Purvis, John Noakes and Valerie Singleton, my first crush! 

It's hard to describe how important the show was. Yes, there were other magazine type shows like Magpie but Blue Peter, during the late Sixties and early Seventies, had our ear. The presenters, the stories, the challenges, the antics, the charity mail-ins, the pets, the annuals and the badges made sure of that and Biddy Baxter was behind it all.

Like our beloved Gerry Anderson, Biddy Baxter's name will be forever associated with the golden age of kids TV.

RIP.

 Ray Brooks

Ray Brooks, the veteran actor who gave voice to the popular kids TV character Mr. Benn has also sadly passed away. 

Mr. Benn was a charming animated show in which Mr.Benn, if I recall rightly,  whilst visiting a fancy dress shop changed his suit and dressed up as another character like a knight and then entered the life of that character. 

Like a Westworld for kids and a cosplay herald, as a 9 year old I loved the show and Ray Brooks' calm voice. Did you?

A colleague at skoo mentioned this today so I thought I'd post it in case you recall it. It means nothing to me. Blue Peter makes a Blakes 7 bracelet in June 1983.

Hi,

I recently picked up a Bleep & Booster annual. I remember having this 50 years ago! Anyway, it was an annual of the very simply animated series shown on Blue Peter. It is thoroughly charming, so I had to make a replica of Bleep himself!

birthday mystery: the blue peter dump truck toy

I've been reminiscing about Blue Peter since John Noakes sadly passed away. He was always around on my Birthdays in the Sixties somehow.

I remember those fab triangular shelves they had in the studio, always full of toys!

One of the shelves contains a blue and yellow truck as seen here behind the great late Noakes.

The truck rang a bell and I wondered if it might be this toy that I have in my collection.

Its the Dump Truck by none other than Century 21 Toys, Gerry Anderson's toy outfit.

Its very hard to tell though to be honest. The truck on the shelf looks like it has two pairs of rear tyres from this angle, which would mean my suggestion is completely out.

There is also the matter of timing.

The dump truck was released in the late Sixties.

I've no idea when the Blue Peter image is from - 1970's? I found it online.

Does anyone know?

Any other ideas about the truck?

I've been away on holiday but now I'm home I just wanted to say a few words about John Noakes, who sadly passed away this week.

John was a TV presenter on the UK television show Blue Peter. He was part of the classic Sixties trio together with Valerie Singleton and Peter Purves.

Of all the passings this year it's John's which has upset me the most.

At a time when there were only two TV channels in the UK in the Sixties Blue Peter, like Thunderbirds, was a real jewel among the many fine gems found on children's television back then. Its magazine format with regular features and exciting stunts was the perfect antidote to a day at school and Noakesy was at its heart.

His Yorkshire accent was a tonic and his boyish personality really made the show. His trademark stunts like jumping from a plane were always a hoot and his relationship with his dog Shep always a pleasure to see and often hilarious. I can hear him saying Get Down Shep now in his earthy Halifax voice even now.

Probably like most kids at the time I watched Blue Peter every week, got to know the presenters well, could spot anything new on the studio displays, saw it progress from black and white to colour and marveled at the editor's name Biddy Baxter! I even got Blue Peter annuals at Christmas. 

I ate my tea on my knees watching Blue Peter: steak pudding, chips, peas and gravy. Valerie, Peter and John were right there with us all as we lived our Sixties lives.

Childhood seems like a distant shifting shore right now but in those golden black and white to colour days John Noakes was centre-stage, climbing steeples, leaping from boats and walking elephants. He was our big brother, friend and teacher rolled into one.

Millions of us kids took him into our hearts back then, where I'm sure he stayed all this time, a flicker of more innocent times, a happy memory.

Alas, with John's passing a little bit of our own childhood has sadly died too.

God bless John,

BLUE PETER DISPLAY CABINETS - GET DOWN SHEP!

Been looking at old shots of the BBC Blue Peter TV show, which I watched and loved  as a kid in the 60's and early 70's - the Singleton/ Noakes/ Purves era. I'm fascinated with the display cabinets in the background as in the picture above. Just what are those objects? ornaments? Toys? Anyone got any close-ups? Did you like Blue Peter?
