BY GUM! IT'S A NOVA STAMP!

Here's another old and beautiful Manama stamp from the Apollo 13 series, this one showing the Nova rocket we know and love as part part of the SpaceX I range of toys.

Almost certainly copied from Ed Valigursky's original art its still a fine illustration and looks great on its fiery cosmic background.

Manama put out some superb stamps. Do you agree?

You may not be able to easily get hold of the SpaceX Moon Buggy but there's always one or two Manama stamps lurking online somewhere.

Its one of the Apollo 13 series, a series of stamps with 'designs for future moon exploration'.

This image online really brought back memories.

I loved that very Royal Mail stamp album as a young philatelist.

The train at the bottom was always a draw.

I can clearly recall the stamps I collected in the Sixties too. So iconic. So many different pictures. I'll have to find some images of them online.

APOLLO 16: FROM THE POSTMAN

I love these old stamps from Manama I saw on Ebay.

They're called Apollo 16.

Some of the spacecraft look familiar to us. The rocket is a lot like a NOVA. the space station was released as a neat Kellogs model, which some of you may have had. The red space glider reminds me of the one in the film Marooned. My favourite craft is the one top right, the long stick-like space station, which would have made a decent SpaceX toy would you say?

PHOTONIC STAMPS

I've blogged about one of these stamps before but not a whole sheet.

This is the Conquest of Space from Yemen 1971.

They are often on Ebay. Like these ones.

Its interesting that on four of the stamps the Photonic Space Station is shown. Its the long thin station with the dish-shaped head. The six stamps are like a narrative of its journey.

You will have heard of the Photonic Space Station maybe as its a fabulous Tri-ang SpaceX toy!

NOVART: NOVA ROCKET ILLUSTRATIONS

There isn't much Nova rocket art online.

I remember being chuffed finding this Nova stamp 5 years ago. Its one of a number of SpaceXesque stamps out there. 

This is part of the Apollo 13 series from Manama. It appears to be a variation on Ed Valigursky's classic Nova illustration/

But only this week I saw this on the Bay. I think its a Nova design minus the four fuel tanks. Its on the cover of a 1962 journal called Space: Man's New Frontier.

I was never a trainspotter as a kid but I did collect stamps for a while.

In fact everyone I knew collected something. My brother collected matchboxes and someone collected beer bottle tops.

My stamp collecting wasn't really that serious but I did enjoy the little philately I did during the late Sixties and the early Seventies.

I had a large hardback book on stamp collecting, which I really liked. It was probably published by Stanley Gibbons via Hamlyn or Collins. I'd love a copy of it now.

My actual stamps were all classics of their day from around the globe. I recall the World Cup, Concorde, Christmas but above all I remember dinosaurs. I think they may have have been marked Polska or Magyar something [Hungary?]. I adored those pictures .

They reminded me of my plastic model dinosaurs by Revell I think. the box art was equally as cool as the stamps.

BY GUM! ITS THE SPACEX - PROJECT SWORD STAMP ALBUM

In these hard times it would be so good to find a way of keeping my collection going with breaking the bank. So I was really chuffed when I discovered the world of SpaceX and SWORD-related stamps!

I've spoken about them before but I had no idea just how many cool and inexpensive stamps there are depicting our fave space toy ranges especially SpaceX. I think I've got it licked though now! ha ha!

So without further ado I give you my SpaceX / SWORD stamp album so far. Some I own. Some I don't:

there are lots of Saturn V's on the crawler featured on stamps. This is my favourite. From Fujeira, like Sharjah, on old desert sheikdom, now part of the UAE.

 

There are also lots of lifting bodies on stamps. Here's a nice USAF one from the Marshall Islands.

I've had some luck recently finding postage stamps online picturing Spacex type vehicles. Here we have:

The vehicle I come across the most on different stamps by far is the Lunar Orbiter, which seemed to capture the global philatelic imagination when it was launched. I haven't managed to find a single Dyna Soar or M1F2/HL10 Lifting Body stamp, although they do feature as illustrations on many first day covers. I have just found this SR71 Blackbird aka Space Patrol 1. There must be more - MOLAB, Stiletto [Hawk], Atomic Beta One [Supply Force Mercury] - have a google. All your finds will be licked and stuck on the blog!
