Kevin's Scratchbuilt UFO SHADO Mobile

Hi,
Here is my scratchbuild of the Shado mobile from UFO. It uses the wheels and tracks from the Topper Toys, Tiger Joe tank.

 A trip this week to a nearby Barnsley emporium was fun. 

Amidst the thousands of send hand treasures on two huge floors I spotted a few for the blog.

This array of die-casts caught my eye.

The Zygons were very appealing at £10 each but I resisted, what with Santa on my case and all.

So too the Lunar war Chariot, just £6. Note the Joe 90 Car exhausts! And is that a SHADO2 missile?

Some old plastic as well, Manta Force and Batman, nicely boxed and encased in plastic boxes. I imagine these are high grade items for such care and attention.

Lethal Enforcer isn't a game I know. the protected Spawn action figure was £75, again, a high grade item.

The Toy Biz Joker Cycle took me right back to 1990 when I first started getting excited about toys again. It was the merchandise tsunami following Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 that did it. I recall standing in front of an aisle of discounted Toy Biz Batman toys at Pontefract's Poundstretcher, including a big stack of these Joker Cycles, and I was hooked.

I came away with these two cute Sixties Skiiers, who were going for a song in the bargain bin outside.

SHADO PLAY

Here are the 2 SHADO Dinky toys that survived my childhood. 

 These are the actual ones I got for Christmas 1970 or thereabouts and they survive to this day because my Mum saved them and kept them until I was old enough and wise enough to reclaim them.

COAST GUARD SHADO 2

I just love this photo I saw on flickr of a US Coastguard vehicle in Sturgeon Bay by Garrit Speckhard.

I'm not entirely sure of its a boat or a land vehicle or both but its got Gerry Anderson chops in spades!

It would have looked great on Thunderbirds!

There's a real SHADO vibe to the front especially when you think of Mike Trim's original concept.

DINKY 353 SHADO 2 MOBILE - CHASSIS DIFFERENCES BY RICHARD

Everyone knows about the smooth / ribbed roof [on the Dinky SHADO2 Mobile], but on the early castings of the chassis, at the rear there are two pillars that connect to the Main Body.

On both these chassis pillars there are six drilled holes (see enclosed pics) . These pillars do not connect flush to the main body at the back doors.

On later castings, this drilled pillar chassis was deleted and a smooth solid pillars chassis was used, with both pillars joining flush to the main body at the back doors. (see pics)

I guess the drilled pillar chassis was only for the first casting run, as in my 30 plus years of collecting & attending fairs I have only come across 5 or 6 with this feature.

I have both types in my collection, & I can only assume Dinky changed the design as perhaps the die would wear out quicker, by being more intricate, having it smoother would be simpler & having the pillars flush to the body would perhaps give more strength to the toy ??

As best I can recollect, & viewing my own, this drilled pillar chassis was only ever with the brick red/brown roller wheels - my version has the ribbed roof.

SHADO 2 EMERGENCY SQUAD

I've always liked the SHADO2 knockoffs Emergency Squad. 

Its plastic and opens up at the rear, which contains another small vehicle.

This window box seems unfamiliar and I'm not sure we've seen it before on Moonbase. I saw it on an old auction and saved the snap. I quite like the header artwork.

L'IL SHADO 2

I see this Lil Playmates Commander toy vehicle all the time online. Its from 1984.

Would you agree its likely to have been influenced by either the Dinky SHADO 2 vehicle or Matchbox Adventure 2000 die-casts?

It appears to be a SHADO Mobile with working lights and then set in a series of stills like a photo-story.

Ever heard of GUP 1?

I hadn't.

Its this blue vehicle from the kids TV show Octonauts.

I couldn't help thinking GUP 1, the top especially, looks like a SHADO 1 from UFO.

Yopu can see this better on the toy version of GUP 1.

EMERGENCY SQUAD 6WD BOOTLEG OF THE SHADO 2 MOBILE AND MULTI-WHEELED FRIENDS

Almost a blog legend, this is another old chestnut from Dennis Nicholson's superb Anderson Memorabilia Book. Part of the tantalisingly cool Knockoffs section, this is the Emergency Squad 6WD bootleg of the UFO SHADO 2 Mobile. The two packaged examples above featured on Ebay several years ago.

Reader John Ward recently sent me these cool pics of his own loose grey Emergency Squad showing the rear opening.

A ramp can be pulled out of the back hatch.

The smaller craft, which can be brought out for trickier operations, looks rather neat. Does anyone know its origin?

Dinky Shado 2

The Dinky Shado 2 Mobile came out in 1971 and went through a few changes before Dinky ended production in 1979.

Mine was bought in 1971 and has a green body and roof, brown rollers and grey tracks. Sadly the box has long gone.

The next versions all had black tracks with green rollers followed by black rollers. The roof was eventually changed to black, and the body colour changed to blue.

The last version had a curious combination of four large drive wheels and eight small middle wheels.

The only gimmick was the missile launcher which was concealed in the flip-over roof.
