Birthday Magic! Ed's ADDCO Magic Products and Terranova47's X-200

After looking at Terranova47's July "OKAY Adventure Annual" post and looking at the photos he shared of his X-200 with the "ADDCO Magic Products" stamping - above - , I started thinking (not too hard mind you - it gives me a headache LOL).

A) I don't believe his X-200 was a '90s re-make, but rather a vintage '50s era piece

B) ADDCO (Advanced Design Development Co.) apparently acquired toys from Pyro, Renwal, and others to use in their 'Magic Guide' series of toys.

Auburn Rubber #518 Fire Truck (eBay)

-A very low-res, copy of ADDCO's Magic Guide instruction sheet dated from 1954 featuring Pyro's X-200 Space Ranger (Worthpoint).

Pyro F7U Cutlass and USAF XF-90 Jet which too have the pins on top (my collection). The ADDCO stamping isn't present on my Cutlass or XF-90.

Renwal No.161 Jet with the ADDCO stamping underneath and the plastic pin sticking up from the fuselage (my collection).

The toy itself - X-200- was similar in concept to Brian H's Tudor Rose Rarity in that two aircraft/spaceships hung down from metal rods, attached to them by lengths of vinyl plastic tubing.

A (windup?) motor on the assembly allowed the planes to fly in circles at breakneck speed. The Auburn fire truck is unusual, and I have no idea what that mechanism entailed.

To-date, I have yet to find a photo of the complete assembly for any Magic Guide toy.

Rising from the Scrappers: A Tudor Rose Boat

A while ago in Rufforth I found a mucky toy boat. Ten bob later, the fixer upper came home.

It reminded me a bit of a plastic ship I had at Butlins as a kid, here in my little mitts far right.

A bonus was the maker, the mark, a tiny circle with the words, among others, Tudor Rose! 

Very grubby, missing most of its small bits and bobs and with a few bridge cracks too, I firstly gave the main hull a  good wash ....

I then glued the bridge supports and added a few oddments from my bits drawer. I couldn't find an original picture so I improvised. 

Good fun using my sea legs again, see what you think.

Platforma Voladora: the Spanish Flying Platform Toy

 Further to Brian's fantastic Tudor Rose flying toy, here's a Spanish plastic flying platform.

Manufactured for J. Cortes of Zaragoza.

Brian's Tudor Rose Men in Space

Here's another unusual Tudor Rose space toy: Men in Space Flying Platform. 

It's one of those spinner launcher toys, but it has a delightful twist: two small hard plastic Tudor Rose figures standing inside a basket affair.

 I think the Americans first came up with the idea - you can see spacemen attached to spinners on a couple of early space guns. 

If my childhood experience is anything to go by, the spinner would have lasted just a couple of hours before it landed on a neighbour's roof.

There's a Batman version of this toy that goes for silly money.

Arto's Tudor Rose Space Cadet Boy Adventurer

I dug up this miniature figure which came years ago as a free gift alongside a grey unmarked X-400 (possibly Kleeware). Could not identify it at the time because there is no maker's mark on it. Attached a photo with the standard-size Tudor Rose spaceman for comparison.

As the sizes (48 mm and 72 mm) match with Brian's, it is safe to assume that the miniature figure is one of the Space Cadet Boy Adventurers.

Thanks to Brian for solving this mystery.

Brian H's Space Plastic Collection

I know this subject is popular on Moonbase.

 Here's part of my space hard plastic collection comprising Tudor Rose, Kleeware, Pyro and other manufacturers. I was lucky enough to meet Lester Harrison back in the day and he was generous with his information.

For the sharp eyed there are a few undocumented pieces sitting there.

 I'm always keen to trade. My current passion is Dan Dare.

Here's an interesting carded set of Tudor Rose spacemen. It's the Space Cadet Boy Adventurers set dating from around 1953. It contains three figures, one 72mm figure and two smaller 47mm figures.

I've seen the larger figure before, it's one of the regular Tudor Rose spacemen as shown at the top of the picture, but in forty years of collecting I've never seen or even heard of the existence of the small scale ones. 

The large figure is marked though the smaller ones have no marks. Once they become separated from the card they would be impossible to identify.

You'll find a variation of this card in Blast Off! but it was used as the base of a blister packed set of figures. 

The figures are standing on the card with the blister dome rising over them. 

Most unusual!

Brian H's Tudor Rose Rarity

I've been quiet online for some time but have been busy collecting. I visit Moonbase Central regularly and it's just about the only place I can find new information about some of my Interests. 

I've been concentrating on early English space toys: Kleeware, Selcol, Tudor Rose and, especially, Dan Dare. 

I thought you might like to see an interesting acquisition I made recently.

It's a battery powered Tudor Rose shop display featuring two of those spectacular Atomic Space Ships along with a batch of motorbikes and sidecars. 

One ship has a motor connected to a battery pack. The other has a lead counterweight. 

The whole thing spins around in an alarming manner. 

If you can use it on your site please feel free. If you'd like more Tudor Rose, Dan Dare or similar stuff, I have plenty of novelties!

Ed's Adventure Annual Pyro and Archer Toys

The recent posts by Arto and Scoop regarding the Adventure Annual (and others) were fun.

 I too have a copy of the Adventure Annual and some of the toy-inspired characters and spaceships I have in my collection. Pictured.

 However, now it looks as if I need to track down the Cheriliea figures!

Arto's Cherilea Monsters

Arto recently picked up the 1950's Spaceways and Adventure Annuals. 

Arto says:

 I'm thrilled to see those toys, X-300 and the X-400 and Cherilea monsters like the Lizard and the Ant-Man (which I have as metal figures) featured in the Annuals' stories.

 I was unaware of this kind of connection until recently, and it adds a whole new dimension to the Pyro / Cherilea lore. 

It would be nice to know which came first, the annuals or the toys.

 The Pyro toys may have been already around in the U.S. at that time (ca. 1954), but how does the publication of the annuals relate to the launch of their Kleeware / Tudor Rose counterparts? 

Was there some kind of planned synchronicity?

Space Clippers on Film

Arto has alerted me to a British sci-fi film, The Terrornauts, from 1967, in which a fleet of Tudor Rose type Space Clippers are obliterated!

Martian Screaming Missile Rifle by Tudor Rose

I wuz gobsmacked when I saw this on eBay last year when researching Dalek toy guns.

One I'd never seen before and certainly a rarity, this is the 30" long Martian Screaming Missile Gun, the M.S.M.G, made by those gorgeous toy makers, Tudor Rose.

With an eye-watering price tag, I saved the pictures for later. It eventually sold I think and some lucky Buck will be making martians tremble everywhere!

Not sure who the creatures are on the box? General martians?

Overall it has a feel of the big Dr.Who bazooka I covered - and made - last year.

A bazooka style toy in a huge box, it's the first time I've ever come across this toy. Is it one you know?
