Konga Diorama from Monarch Models

Hi,

Here is a new You Tube video from CultTVman, showing various kits that are coming out soon, or which are being re-issued.

It includes a close-up look at the Monarch Models Konga diorama kit from Canada, which is now due in early 2025.

The kit shown, which is a test shot, is moulded in several colours – orange for Konga, pale yellow for the humans, green for the base, and brick red for the building walls. There are no clear parts for the windows.

Monarch Models are really expensive, and produced in limited numbers, so this is one for dedicated Konga fans only. It has been in the pipeline for several years.

One for you maybe?

KING KONG DOES VEGAS

Further to this summer's Konga week I ended up with a few K2's after Peter Jackson's movie came out. There were eleven Peter Jackson's "Kong The 8th Wonder of The World" sets by Playmates.

Nine of the sets had Kong's that were about 6" high. The other two sets were a larger Roaring Kong and his nemesis, a Roaring T-Rex.

Then there were the Burger King tie-ins as well.

Enjoy!

Unknown Gorilla! So Spectacular It Took One Year to Produce!

I'm remembering Konga week, with this recent re-discovery, a 1948 adventure film called Unknown Island.

A terrific movie, with some excellent man-in-suit prehistoric monsters, and even a giant gorilla! (See pic). Unknown Island was filmed in a two-color process called CineColor, and the restored DVD at least, is excellent!

Here's to another "Giant Monkey Week!"

KONGA WEEK FINALE: THE MIGHTY KOGAR, TRACY AND BOB BURNS BY PAUL ADAMS

Hi,

Firstly, I would like to thank Max from Max's Models for pointing out the existence of this model, which I missed when doing my list of gorilla kits.

When I built my Man in a Monkey Suit model, converted from a toy gorilla with a spare human head, I did not realise that Moebius Models had already produced a very similar model, but in a much larger scale.

American actor and movie memorabilia collector Bob Burns frequently played a gorilla on television in the 1960s and 1970s, beginning with an appearance on the comedy series Mickey, starring Mickey Rooney. The episode being Mickey Crashes the Movies, which aired on 14th October 1964.

Bob Burns had his own gorilla suit, the body of which was made by his wife Kathy, with the head, hands, chest, and feet being made by Don Post, the famous Hollywood mask maker. The gorilla was named Kogar, and he went on to appear in many other television programmes.

Kogar almost made it on to The Munsters TV series, as Eddie Munster's new pet. This plan got as far as a publicity appearance at a shopping mall, but the series was cancelled in 1966, and Kogar never appeared on The Munsters.

With a new head, Kogar played Tracy ('trained by Bob Burns') in The Ghost Busters. This was a 1975 live-action TV series about a pair of bumbling private eyes and a gorilla, who battled ghosts. The human stars were Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch. All 15 episodes can be found on You Tube.

Tracy the gorilla does not talk, but usually wears a yellow hat with a propeller on top, and drives the company car. According to this site, it is a 1929 Willys Overland Whippet.

Details mainly from the book It Came From Bob's Basement, by Bob Burns and John Michlig, Chronicle Books, 2000, which devotes several pages to Kogar.

Moebius Models is one of several smaller, specialised kit companies in the USA, making film and TV tie-in models in the classic Aurora style. Even the company logo resembles the old Aurora oval.

Moebius was founded in 2006. Kogar, kit No.659, has the copyright date 2012 on the bottom of the box, along with Made in China.

Monsters of the Movies - 1/12 Scale All Plastic Snap-Together Custom Builder Kit With Optional Parts - No Cement Needed - The Mighty Kogar. The parts are moulded in either light brown or pink plastic. Being a snap-together kit, there are not too many parts, although you do get a small display base.

A major feature of the model is the inclusion of three heads: Kogar; Tracy with hat; or Bob Burns. Different decals are included for the clapper board sign, depending on the head used.

The box art is a bit gruesome, with Kogar standing in a jungle clearing, and a couple of heads (and a skull - not included in the kit) on poles in the foreground.

Moebius Models site, which lists all their kits - photo of assembled models from here.

Cultvman also had a Limited Edition version of the Kogar kit, which included a model of Bob's wife, Kathy Burns.

Six photographs, mostly from Worthpoint, and one from Moebius Models.

That's the end of our Konga and Friends week. Hope you enjoyed it.

PRIMAL PREDICAMENTS

Saw a modern flick called Primal Force recently about angry baboons. It was dire but I appreciated the aping around.

Here's the German DVD cover with Ron primal Perlman

It reminded me of a much older horror flick called Primal Rage, again about very cross gorillas.

Do you remember Primal Rage from the 1988? I may have it on VHS.

There was a range of carded action figures and boxed vehicles too I think but theses came out in the mid-90's so may not have anything to do with the film. The movie was a horror film and not really for kids!

I may have sold a few of these figures and weapons over the years. Hard to say. The plastic parts of many action figure ranges all looked the same in the 90's!

Here's the toys' TV ad courtesy of You Tube.

I suppose Jurassic Park and Congo boosted this whole sub-genre of toys as crazed apes and armoured dinosaurs suddenly appeared in many ranges like Primal Rage, Dino Riders and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.

MAN IN A MONKEY SUIT: A TRIBUTE BY PAUL ADAMS

Hi

Back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, no thriller or comedy movie was complete without a gorilla on the rampage. Played by a man in a 'monkey suit'.

This is my tribute to these - literally - faceless actors. The men in the suits, who played Konga, and a host of other normal or giant sized gorillas, in all those movies.

Hope you enjoy it.

I started with a toy gorilla in a standing pose, which came in a bag of six assorted Wild Animals. All are moulded in a rather soft plastic.

The gorilla just would not stand upright on his own, so I had to give him a base. This was from an old Airfix Multipose figure set.

It is moulded in white plastic, so it has been in my spares box since the late 1970s - finally found a use for it. Moral of the story - never throw anything away.

The gorilla is beheaded with a small hacksaw, and the cut cleaned up with a knife. The body and inside of the head are hollow, so the body was stuffed with paper towel until it was full.

The only human part required was a head. The only heads I had available were 1/32nd scale, and just a bit too small.

The next size up is 1/24th scale. The Tamiya Campus Friends Set 2 accessory kit includes five figures and a motor scooter in 1/24th, and I was able to find one.

There is only one male figure in the set, but he has optional heads, so you can use one for the gorilla, and still build the standard figure.

The head is glued in place with Uhu glue, as polystyrene cement is unlikely to work on the soft plastic used for the gorilla. The gorilla head is placed over one fist, while the man in the suit gets some fresh air.

The model is then painted with Humbrol and Tamiya enamels. Semi-gloss black for the flesh areas, matt black for the fur, and brown for the eyes.

For some reason the paints did not want to dry to their proper finish, so the model is glossier than he should be. Still, a fun little project.

KONGA WANTS YOUR WONGA!

Surfing for Konga I was gobsmacked by this cool blog's movie pressbook post from 2015.

A veritable simian treasure trove!

Generously, Zombo's Closet posted the entire thing, so enjoy it!

One thing that caught my eye on the page marked Special Exploitation Material was the Konga bank. A statue more or less!

Zooming in on the bank we can see that it was 8 inches high and as the release of the film was 1961 then this bank was available in 1961 too.

There is no mention of the material used or where the coin slot was.

Fascinated by this cash-lovin' Konga I tried to find one online. Nada! Nichts! Nowt!

What I did find was a King Kong bank. In fact hordes of them!

Here's a Kong bank that looks awfully similar to our other simian friend.

The base is labelled.

It reads "Copyright S & O Mdse. Co. 1953. The old auction described it as 'hand painted molded ceramic', 'Meant to be broken to retrieve coins' and 'size 5.5" wide, 3" deep and 7.5" tall'.

I don't know what the S & O Mdse. Co means but at 7.5 inches tall I would say we have a match! Kong is Konga!

Some bright spark simply added a Konga name onto deadstock of these pre-existing King Kong banks from 1953 and flogged them in 1961 when Konga came out.

I can't find a Konga bank because the names have simply dropped off the Kongs!

What do ya reckon fellow ape men?

GORILLA KITS - RESEARCH BY PAUL ADAMS

There have only been a few Gorilla kits over the years [other than Aurora's famous King Kong] . Here is a quick run-down. Some of these have been mentioned before on Moonbase Central, but here they are all together.

*
Monarch Models Konga

[courtesy of Toy Heroes]

Monarch Models of Canada have had a Konga diorama kit in the pipeline for a few years now, but it has yet to appear. It shows the now giant Konga crashing through a house, with the various human figures not faring too well. The scale is 1/35th.

[Prototype box and marketing appeared at this June's Wonderfest, Louisville, USA]

*

ITC Marvel Metal Gorilla

ITC Model Craft, the Hobby Division of the Ideal Toy Corporation, released a group of six kits in the early 1960s called the Marvel Metal Animal Series. These were all moulded in black plastic, and came with a substance called Marvel Metal Finishing Compound that was painted over the model, and then buffed to give a bronze-like finish.

All the kits depicted various wild animals. The copyright date on the box is 1960, but they appear to have been very short-lived, and have not been re-issued by anyone else, as far as I can see.

Kit number 3856-198 was a Gorilla. The -198 suffix meant that they originally sold for $1.98.

*

Revell Endangered Mountain Gorilla

In 1974 Revell introduced another short-lived line of snap-together kits, called Endangered Animals. All had moving parts.

The Mountain Gorilla, H-703, was moulded in black plastic. It had a movable head, jaws, and legs; and came with an Environmental Display Base.

The kits were later re-issued by Revell Germany, with a 1991 copyright date on the boxes. The name on the box now being Berg-Gorilla.

This kit was also released by Revell/Kikoler of Brazil as a King Kong tie-in model, for the 1976 movie.

*

4D Vision Gorilla Anatomy Kit

4D Master make a range of educational anatomy kits, both human and animal. These are simpler than the old Renwal kits, and the parts come pre-finished. They just need to be assembled.

The Gorilla has various parts of the body: the head, chest, one arm, and one leg, moulded in clear plastic, to show off the skeleton and internal organs.

The kits have been released under a range of different names, in different countries. They can be painted, if you just want a display model.

There have been a few Japanese kits, by Marusan and Imai, of giant gorillas. But I am not sure if these are actually Gorillas, or un-official King Kong models.

*

Wagon Master Circus Gorilla Cage

In addition to their extensive line of Old West wagon kits, the US company Wagon Master did a small range of vintage Circus Wagons. Among these was the Gorilla Cage - alas, no actual Gorilla was included.

These were large scale wooden kits, with pre-shaped parts. Horses, mules, or oxen, to draw the wagon, were available separately.

The kits appear to date from the 1950s or perhaps early 1960s, and remained available at least in to the 1970s under the Craft Master name.

TROGLODYTES ASSEMBLE!

Seeing this black and white image on the back of Ken Films' box, as posted by Paul, it rang a distinct bell.

At first I thought it was one of those bone-pounding monolith apes at the beginning of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Further rumination led me to the answer.

Trog!

Ah, TROG, 1970's missing link movie starring Hollywood dame Joan Crawford in her last ever one and described as her 'most terrible film'. Somewhere in my attic I have TROG on VHS. He's just waiting to burst free from the loft!

Have you seen it?

If not, watch the TROG the trailer if you dare!

Oh ... and Konga boss Micheal Gough gets a look-in too!

MONKEY BUSINESS: THE GHOST BUSTERS 1975 - RESEARCH BY PAUL ADAMS

Hi

The Ghost Busters was a live-action Seventies American children's TV show.

It only ran for 15 episodes, all of which are available to watch on You Tube; it has also been released on DVD.

The series was made by Filmation, and screened on the CBS network, from September to December 1975, on Saturday mornings. Created by Marc Richards, who also wrote all the episodes.

The show was clearly made on a tiny budget, and a lot of the action happens off screen. The weekly guest cast never runs to more than three people, and the sets are limited to a graveyard, castle, a store, and the company office. The running time of each episode is around 22 minutes 15 seconds.

Spencer, Tracy, and Kong - Ghost Busters are a team of professional ghost hunters, who work from an office in a rather run-down old building. The team comprises two humans, and one gorilla.

Forrest Tucker is Kong, the head (King ?) of the firm.

Larry Storch is Spencer, although the name on the office door is Spenser.

Bob Burns is Tracy the gorilla, 'trained by Bob Burns' according to the credits. He does not speak (although he does sing in Ep.6, and speaks in Ep.8 when Spencer is switched in to his body). He communicates by drawings or charades.

In Episodes 2 and 13 references are made to Tracy's grandfather, and the Empire State Building. This strongly implies that Tracy is King Kong's grandson. Tracy also has an extensive collection of hats, although his favourite is the small yellow one with a red propeller on top.

Lou Scheimer is the voice of Zero, who is never seen. It is not explained who Zero is, if he is their boss, or a client.

Spencer and Tracy are clearly named after the American actor Spencer Tracy.

Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch had previously been in the comedy series F Troop (1965-67). Several other familiar TV faces appeared in the series.

Despite what has been written elsewhere, stating that Tracy is merely an assistant to the human Ghost Busters, he is actually a full part of the team. His name even appears on the office door.

His duties include driving the company car, an old touring car, painted white, with the Ghost Busters logo on the doors in black and yellow. No one thinks it odd that a gorilla is driving a vintage car.

According to this site the car is a 1929 Willys-Overland Whippet.

Tracy also carries a large bag on each assignment. This is similar to the one carried by Mary Poppins, and is filled with various useful and useless gadgets. Among these is the Ghost De-materializer, which sends the ghosts back to their ghostly realm.

The series resembles a normal Private Eye show in many ways, except that the Ghost Busters only handle cases involving ghosts. Scooby Doo also looks to have been a major influence.

Woodsy pointed out that the way the team encounters various monsters and historical characters resembles several of the Abbott and Costello movies of the 1940s and 1950s, such as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; or Captain Kidd.

Woodsy also mentioned The Bowery Boys and the Dead End Kids. Well, there is an even closer connection than you might think, as Huntz Hall, who was one of the Dead End Kids/Bowery Boys, appears in two episodes: Which Witch is Which ?, and Merlin the Magician.

Each episode follows the same format. We open in a graveyard or the castle, where the Ghost of the Week appears. They then take up residence in a nearby castle (more of a haunted mansion).

Cut to the office of the Ghost Busters, and some shenanigans. Kong then sends Spencer and Tracy to a local store, where they pick up their latest assignment from Zero.

Their orders are received via a tape recording, in the same manner as Mission: Impossible. The tape recorder is hidden inside various objects, such as a fish, bunch of flowers, or a clock. Once played, the tape announces that it will self-destruct in 5 seconds - Tracy counts down, and always gets blown up.

Back to the office for a planning session. Then off to the graveyard and castle, to do battle with the ghosts. Finally the ghosts are sent home using the Ghost De-materializer.

Ep.1 The Maltese Monkey

Based on The Maltese Falcon. The Fat Man and his side-kick Rabbit summon the ghost of Big Al Caesar, a gangster who looks just like Spencer - they even wear the same suit.

Ep.2 Dr. Whatshisname

Frankenstein needs a gullible brain for his Monster, which is a lot like Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

Ep.3 The Canterville Ghost

A cowardly ghost must perform a brave deed before he can pass on, but a thief is after the fabulous Canterville diamond.

Ep.4 Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf ?

A Werewolf and his Gypsy fortune-teller Mother. The Werewolf is named Harry Albert, a clear reference to Larry Talbot in the Wolfman movies.

Ep.5 The Flying Dutchman

The Captain and his First Mate are looking for new crewmen, with an off-screen appearance by Moby Dick.

Ep.6 The Dummy's Revenge

The Phantom of Vaudeville, a ventriloquist, and his dummy Elmo. Tracy sings in this episode. With Ali Baba.

Ep.7 A Worthless Gauze

An Egyptian Queen and her Mummy are looking for the secret of immortality - despite already being ghosts. With an appearance by Jesse James.

Ep.8 Which Witch is Which ?

A Witch is out for revenge on the descendent of the spell-dissolver of Salem, who sent her to the Great Beyond centuries ago. The ugly old hag turns herself in to a beautiful woman, using a spell that will deceive any human eye. Being a gorilla, Tracy is not fooled.

Ep.9 They Went Thataway

Real life out-laws Billy the Kid and Belle Star are out to rustle some cattle. In this episode we learn that Tracy builds flying model aircraft.

Ep.10 The Vampire's Apprentice

The Count and Countess Dracula. Spencer is briefly turned in to a vampire by the Countess.

Ep.11 Jekyll & Hyde: Together, For the First Time

Jekyll is trying to get rid of Hyde. There is also a Martian trying to catch a Flying Saucer back to Mars.

Ep.12 Only Ghosts Have Wings

The Red Baron and his co-pilot, who looks more like a mechanic, are out to get the pilot who won their last encounter.

Ep.13 The Vikings Have Landed

Viking explorer Eric the Red is looking for his old flag, but ends up with Tracy's knitting instead.

Ep.14 Merlin, the Magician

For once the Ghost Busters team up with the ghosts of Merlin and his assistant, to battle Morgan Le Fay.

Ep.15 The Abominable Snowman

Doctor Centigrade and his Dancing Yeti. With an appearance by Paul Revere.

Despite its low budget, this is still a fun series, and well worth watching. Lots running gags, and references to old movies, and classic film monsters.

The Moebius kit of Konga includes three different heads, for Kogar; Bob Burns without the gorilla head; and Tracy from The Ghost Busters, wearing his favourite yellow hat.

In the 1980s there was a cartoon series based on the earlier live-action show, but there were a number of changes. The human leads now being the sons of the original team, although Tracy the gorilla remained.

Paul Adams from New Zealand

SCHAPER'S TRACY: THE GHOST BUSTERS GORILLA ACTION FIGURE

Sometimes films and TV series get as mixed up as spaghetti.

So it is with Ghostbusters. Or should I say Ghost Busters. As such characters get lost, forgotten and misplaced like a gorilla in a haystack.

Tracy is such a gorilla, the resident ape in the CBS live-action Ghost Busters TV series which ran for 15 episodes in 1975.

Tracy was played by that classic man in a gorilla suit, Bob Burns, the famous monster and sci-fi film archivist. Bob's passion for props is very much on the vein of Forry J. Ackerman but that's another story.

Like any great convoluted story, it was the success of that other more famous Ghostbusters a decade later in 1984 - Yes, Who ya gonna Call! - which gave the original CBS show the bananas to swing back into view as a new animated TV series by Filmation, Ghostbusters and later Filmation's Ghostbusters after a rumble in the jungle with Stay Puft the Marshmallow Man.

As a toy collector its the toys that Filmation's show spawned that really interest me. It only lasted a single season in 1986 but Schaper released a whole troop of toys and sets, including yes, you've guessed it, Tracy! After ten years Bob Burns's aping around was immortalised in plastic!

The toy Tracy figure carries a purple Ghost Gummer, a gadget which, in the cartoon, blasted a pink fluid over evil nasties. It was really good at slowing ghosts down.

I've never ever seen a Tracy toy in the flesh, neither carded nor loose. I can't even recall seeing the Schaper line at premier UK toy fairs like Memorabilia. Did it sell outside of the home market in 1986? It cannot have been easy competing with that primordial slew of Real Ghostbusters' toys from Mattel, which were everywhere!

A couple of interesting points about Schaper's [of Cootie fame] 1986 Ghostbusters line. In the same year they were bought by toy giant Tyco, so whether this changed any of the branding on the cards I would be interested to know. Also each toy came with a mini-comic, again, something I have personally never seen.

Have you?

If you have a Tracy Gorilla figure then spare a thought for Bob Burns and his original ape suit back in 1975, as you can see here in this You Tube clip. Now that's proper monkey business!

What do you think?

KONGA ON SUPER 8 FILM - RESEARCH BY PAUL ADAMS

Before the appearance of videotape in the 1970s, watching a movie at home involved running real film through a projector, on to a real movie screen. Just like in a movie theatre, although on a much smaller scale.

Movies intended for showing in halls and other large venues usually came on 16mm gauge film, while home movies were usually on 8mm. Standard or Regular 8mm; and Super 8, which had a larger image.

The films could be black and white or colour, and silent or sound. Most feature films were cut-down considerably to fit on to just one or two reels of film. These condensed versions were called digests.

Konga was available on Super 8 from Ken Films, of Fort Lee, New Jersey. The movie came on a single reel of film, packed in a square cardboard box, with a lift-off lid.

The box top illustration is taken from the movie poster, but for some reason Konga is now facing to the right, rather than to the left. London has also been reduced to just a couple of famous landmarks.

The catalogue description reads: 276 Konga - Science Fiction thriller about a small monkey which grows into a huge beast threatening the people of London. An exciting film. (B).

The (B) code stood for a black and white film, on a 200 foot reel, with a running time of approximately 11 minutes. At the time this catalogue came out, the regular price was $7.95, or $5.95 with coupon.

It seems there was also a colour sound version available, but not mentioned in this catalogue. Colour sound films on a 200 foot reel were $15.95, or $11.95 with coupon.

There is no date on the catalogue, but my guess would be early or mid-1970s. These were the prices for an 11 minute film - so they were really expensive for the day. No wonder videotape took over the world.

Photographs from Worthpoint

*
Postscript

I just found these interesting little items on You Tube. A Super 8 digest version of Konga, in colour with sound, dubbed in to German. The title is Konga - Schlimmer als King Kong, which seems to be Konga - Worse than King Kong.

The running time is only around seven and a half minutes, so at first I was not sure if it was exactly the same as the Ken Films version. But it does give a good idea of how a one and a half hour movie was cut down for home viewing on 8mm and Super 8.

Then I found a ten minute version in black and white. This one is silent, but with sub-titles on the screen. It seems to be the same as the above version, despite the difference in running times.

I'M NOT LION: MIGHTY JOE YOUNG WAS PRETTY DARN MIGHTY!

I adored 1949's Mighty Joe Young as a kid in the Sixties.
It must have been on the telly if I saw it.

The amazing black and white scene created by the dynamic duo of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen [his first film] where Joe grapples the lion wagon has stuck with me to this day.

With my trusty Britains Gorilla like the one below I saw on Ebay [which you must have had too readers] I played out this scene over and over with my Chipperfields Circus set lions.

Seeing this different vintage set on Ebay - the Cragstan Kiddie Land Train - it took me right back to me monkeying around with my Mighty Joe.

I think someone has added the gorilla as its not listed on the box!

Do you have any Mighty Joe memories readers or any gorilla toys?

KONGA COVER IN MINIATURE BY PAUL ADAMS

Hi

Just for fun, I decided to see if I could re-create the Monarch Books Konga cover - above - in model form. This is not a permanent diorama, it was only set up for the photographs.

I used existing models and kits, so they are not an exact match for the cover, but the figures are painted to match the Monarch colours. The grass and foliage are plastic, from the artificial flower section of a $2 shop (Pound Shop in Britain).

Konga himself is a Schleich Male Gorilla, height about 80mm. This is a beautiful model, which is very well finished - no re-painting was needed.

The lady is from the 1/24th scale Tamiya Campus Friends Set 2*. This includes five figures and a motor scooter. She is a 13-part kit in buff coloured plastic, and despite some very oddly shaped parts, the fit is excellent.

The gentleman is a kneeling mechanic from the 1/25th scale AMT Tip Top Shop set, one of a series of three garage accessory kits. He consists of just five parts, in white plastic.

Then it was just a matter of setting everything up, and taking the photographs. Here they are. I hope you like them.

Six photographs, the Konga cover is from Worthpoint, the rest are mine.

Paul Adams from New Zealand

*The Tamiya and AMT kits contain several other figures - I am sure I will be able to find uses for them too.
