Continuing my peek at GI Joe/ Action Man's other job, posing for Curtis Books, here we have him modelling his runabout, the Space Capsule, on When Two Worlds Meet.

The scale of the figure and the spacecraft seems out to me. What do you think?

A controlled murderous solar system!

I don't think this is an Action Man/GI Joe but rather a model kit of an astronaut although I'm unsure which.

Curtis really did like to use toys and models on their book covers! Probably nabbed off the photographer's son!

Anyone recognise the astronaut?

Is he the same as this one from 1969?

CURTIS COVER CONFIDENTIAL: TWINKLE TWINKLE KILLER KANE

Continuing  my gander at vintage Curtis Book covers I've gone off-piste tonight with this one, Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane by William Peter Blatty.

Blatty is of course famous for writing The Exorcist, which went on to become the scariest film of all time according to some critics.

I haven't read Killer Kane but I do have a copy in my vintage book collection. It has a different cover - below - to the Curtis copy above. Curtis focus on the space theme which must feature strongly in the book. Those that have read it will be able to relate to this.

My own book has a cover depicting a surreal house and grounds with a General's star as a flower. It reminds me of another book cover I have in my collection, The House on the Borderland, yet another I haven't read!

Yet another Action Man GI Joe cover from Curtis Books! They really made our plastic spaceman work for his oxygen that day. This is the 4th cover and we haven't finished yet!

Is that a different pose to the other covers I see?

This third Curtis Books cover appears to have used the same GI Joe Action Man Astronaut image as the last one.

I think they've just flipped it vertically and given it a different foreground.

The object to the side is now clearly visible as a Nova-like rocket, which I assume is a model kit, although I don't know which one. You?

ACTION MAN GI JOE BOOK COVERS 1

The first of a series of old paperback covers by Curtis Books featuring the GI Joe/ Action Man astronaut in all his silver glory.

The use of photographing toys by contemporary book publishers for their covers has a long history and is similar to the photo-box art on many Sixties and Seventies toy boxes.

Does anyone know how the photographer achieved this cover?
