Lajos Jakab

Grand Master

Hungarian pioneer of martial arts. Known as the Father of Martial Arts in the West. Lajos developed his own style, Jakab and taught Roger Moore and Engelbert Humperdink, amongst many others.

Standout item: Lajos Jakab was a well-known martial artist in the 70's and his booklet on his style was a favourite of mine.

Grand Master of Taekwondo [Korean Karate]

Regarded as the Father of American Taekwondo. A friend of Bruce Lee. Starred in When Taekwondo Strikes along with Angelo Mao and Sammo Hung. Taught many famous people including Muhammad Ali.

Justifiably nicknamed Lady Kung Fu. Famously appeared as Bruce's sister in Enter the Dragon.

[1929-1985]

Early American martial arts pioneer. Prolific martial arts author and book publisher. He choreographed the spectacular fight scene between actors Frank Sinatra and Henry Silva in the 1962 movie, Manchurian Candidate

GIMME BRUCE LEE'S KUNG FU CROWN: DAVID CHIANG

David Chiang

[age 68]

With his cheeky grin, David Chiang was one of many Seventies Hong Kong Kung Fu film stars suggested as the successor to Bruce Lee's crown of King of Kung Fu.

Standout film for me: 1974's The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, co-starring Hammer's leading man Peter Cushing and European beauty Julie Ege. Hammer teamed up with Kung Fu kings the Shaw Brothers for their final bite at Dracula giving them a wholly new way of blood-letting with the help of Chinese swords and spears. 

The unique transfusion of British gothic horror into Hong Kong's Wuxia film industry bombed at the cinema but for some the 7 Golden Vampires remains Hammer's greatest 1970's flick, tapping as it does into the now waning vampire vein and the burgeoning global Martial Arts craze sparked by Bruce Lee's The Big Boss in 1971.
