Hanky Panky

I saw this on auction. From 1965, I reckoned it was a Thunderbirds hanky, but the description said ...

Printed on a heavy woven substrate, the surface exhibits a distinctive textile texture. It is displayed in a frame with overall dimensions of approximately 18 × 17 inches.

Sounds like a canvas or sacking!

CROSSROADS

A further example of Century 21's more unusual merchandise licences was 'Crossroads'.

It was one of the early UK TV soaps, an ATV show, which aired for many years.

It also enjoyed a comic strip in TV Century 21's comic stablemate 'Lady Penelope' too.

Did anyone like Crossroads and do you have any of the comic strips or other merchandise readers?

CENTURY 21 AND ABBA

Perhaps one of the most surprising licences for Gerry Anderson's Century 21 Merchandising company, and a late one, is for various Abba publications.

Yep, Abba. Waterloo and all that! Here's the Lyrical Collection book from 1982.

CENTURY 21 LICENCES: A FEW MORE

Here we have the Champions' paperback and The Man In A Suitcase paperback

and from the 1967 Dinky catalogue 'The Prisoner' Mini Moke and the 'Candy and Andy' Stripey The Magic Mini car. 

This is the only one that mentions Century 21 on any of these!

CENTURY 21 PERSUADERS MONTY GUM CARDS

Reader Bernard Dunne kindly sent me some information about The Persuaders.

It concerned Jaz Wiseman's book, The Persuaders Monty Gum Cards Collection.

These cards were copyrighted as (C) Century 21 Ltd, as you can see bottom right in this example card I found pictured on Ebay.

Among many interesting things Bernard has pointed out to me that the book states that there was also an edition of these cards issued in Israel. http://spyvibe.blogspot.com/2015/11/jaz-wiseman-interview.html

My own googling has found this Dutch version of the collectors catalogue issued in Holland. This was pictured on Worthpoint.

AP FILMS MERCHANDISING 1963

This is an interesting article about AP Films from 1963 shown on the informative Super-M website. It mentions commercials on the Rank circuit, which I assume means in between the features shown in Rank cinemas.

Century 21 Records original UK shop display poster issued by Record Retailer magazine, 1965. This poster was for use in record shops to promote the launch of Century 21 label and advertised the first six EPs to be released.

abba and the mystery of century 22 publishing

Searching for books released by Gerry Anderson's publishing arm, Century 21 Publishing Ltd, can be a lot of fun.

Occasionally searches cough up a curve-ball ... or should that be a fur-ball?

One such book is this on Abba Intermezzo, a German ABBA book list site:

ABBA: A Lyrical Collection

At some point in the early '80's Century 21 must have picked up a licence to market ABBA joining dozens of other publishers at the time.

For some reason this is the only book I can find that Century 21 published. It's listed as being published by Century 21 Merchandising and not the publishing arm, which may have folded by 1982 [I have previously found an ABBA poster from 1982 as well].

The real mystery are these further four ABBA publications listed on Abba Intermezzo, the Abba books website, including one re-issue and a magazine.

They were released by Century 22 in the early 1990's from the same location as that listed for Century 21 in the 1980's, namely Iver Heath in Bucks!

So just who are Century 22?

Any ideas readers?

GERMAN UFO TV BOOK 1971

Century 21 Merchandising stretched right across Europe particularly when it came to UFO. 

There are Italian books and here's one from Germany I saw on  The Cartoonist blog here. Its called In Den Faengen Der Ausserirdischen dated 1971.

CENTURY 21 MERCHANDISING'S PAUL DANIELS' PUZZLETIME

Apparently Century 21 Merchandising published the late magician Paul Daniels' Paul Daniels' Puzzletime. 

It ran from November 1981 to July 1982 and ran for 9 issues. 

I can't find a picture anywhere of this publication. Can anyone help?

THE CASE OF THE MYSTERIOUS MAN FROM UNCLE SHIRT AND HAT AFFAIR

I do love original displays of Century 21 merchandise and toys from the time they were made. There is something definite and undeniable about them, a brief but clear glimpse into a murky past we are desperately trying to see.

Here's one I've had languishing in my online photo archive for ages. Its appeared many times before in magazines and online but its sheer volume is worth seeing over and over:

Hailing from the journal British Toys, December 1966, it displays many of the character toys under licence to Century 21 Merchandising. Not all were released via Century 21 Toys and many other toy companies are represented here too.

With this mind, two items I've never noticed before now intrigue me:

The top item is a school or work shirt clearly branded with the Man from Uncle logo. The bottom item appears to be a pork pie hat, again branded as Man from Uncle. .

I know Century 21 had a licence for Man from Uncle but I've never seen these two before.

Has anyone any more information about them readers? Its an UNCLE mystery!

CENTURY 21 ABBA POSTER

Occasionally I search for Century 21 Publishing on fleabay and amazon. I was surprised last week, whilst trawling Ebay,  that they'd issued an ABBA poster! More surprising was the date of publication, 1982. I had no idea that they were still around in the Eighties. Maybe there's more posters from the big hair decade or was this their Waterloo?
