I was checking Todocollecion for the Bullycan aircraft carrier I got a few years back and was really surprised to see it in a Bullycan catalogue ..... dated 1987!
Wow! You could still get something SpaceX-inspired as late as 1987! That's just two years before my collecting bug was kicked off by the Michael Keation batman movie in '89! I could have got a brand new one. I even went to Majorca in the early 90's!
Is there anything SpaceXy/ Apollo Moon Exploringy even later still brand new? LP-inspired baggy's made in China maybe?
Such is the circle of a toy life!
Here are two pics borrowed from the listing.
The aircraft carrier - yellow - aka Portaviones - is bottom left.
The catalogue is 37 pages so it could well still advertise the three spacecraft on the carrier, which also came separately on a blister card and were branded Aviones Cosmicos or Space Planes.
A short video by someone else of the same toy I got a few years back, the Bullycan Portaviones, a plastic aircraft carrier with SpaceX Hawk-like planes.
Checking my old email archive I came across a nugget of insight from blog friend Paul Vreede regrading my Spanish toy aircraft carrier.
Paul V says that looking at the pics there, he noticed a couple of Hawker Harriers hovering in the box top illustration. So he looked those up on wikipedia, curious to know when those first flew.
Where it turns out the Spanish navy also operated Sea Harriers (they called them Matadors) off their carrier called the Dédalo.
The second thing new to the blog this month is Spanish.
Its a gorgeous variant of the Hawk by Bullycan.
I have a number of Bullycan SpaceX-styles toys including Hawks as part of their Aviones Cosmicos and Portoaviones ranges.
This one is new to me and the blog.
Although its the standard soft plastic the company used, this Bullycan Hawk is quite sophisticated compared to their other simpler versions.
Besides the new tri-colour scheme, which I love, this one has retractable wings
and unlike these hollow Bullycans ..
.. this one also has a solid base on which the wheels are attached.
It fairs really well against the original Tri-ang SpaceX Hawk too
They are the same size
Its interesting to compare it with the Tri-ang original and one of Bullycan's simpler Hawks as featured on my Bullycan Aircraft carrier
All three are more or less the same size
The next question is whether this special Hawk came on special packaging or the standard Aviones Cosmicos triple pack Bullycan issued?
Maybe one day we'll find out. In the meantime I'm happy my new Hawk has joined my growing Bullycan fleet.
For more information about Bullycan's Spacex I made a video a while back
and for even more detailed information consult my friend Paul Vreede's beautiful Bullycan chapter on his definitive SpaceX website. Paul even spoke to them and the moulds may still exist!
