Ed's Space Wars HG Set

Woodsy, I managed to pick up this boxed HG Toys (Harett Gilmar Co.) 'Space Wars' playset from around 1979 - maybe earlier. My set was missing two of the Space Commando figures but I had plenty of extras to replace the two.

Anyone else got one?

Ed's Buck Rogers Galactic Play Set

I set up my HG Toys No. 892 BUCK ROGERS in The 25th Century Galactic Play Set to see how big a space the whole thing takes. 

The pieces take up all of a 30" (76.2cm) x 40" (101.6cm) piece of black foamcore. Looking at the setup also gave me ideas for future photo shoots.

 I think I need to make a base scenicked in light brown / caramel brown ground cover, vs. the black as shown in the photos. It's a busy little set with a lot going on, so any future photo shoots will utilize far less pieces. 

The backdrop graphics are designed to be displayed in a semi-circular fashion but I think placing them in a linear fashion would work better. 

Anywho, those are all projects for another day.

Ed's Buck Rogers HG Toys Galactic Play Set

Here's one of about two dozen playsets sitting out in The Cave that I finally took off the shelf and started photographing. 

I don't have all the photos taken yet but this will give you an indication of the treasures within this set.

The playset is based on the television series which ran from 1979-81 and HG Toys did a really nice job in packing a lot of action into a relatively small playset.

There are:

Three distinct sets of figures:

-Character figures from the TV series

-Space Commandos

-Robo Aliens (provided by LP)

Spaceships:

-Two brown Draconian Marauders of the Draconian Empire (the bad guys)

-Two white starfighters

(I still need to apply the stickers onto the spaceships and then photograph them)

-One large flying saucer. 

The words 'Star Station X-5' are molded into the upper hull, and this saucer is a hold-over from previous HG space playsets like their 'Alien Attack' and 'Space Wars' playsets. 

(The box art shows a blue saucer, but I've only ever seen yellow)

Cardboard Graphics:

-Seven separate graphics depicting alien landscapes and a landing strip

THE ALIEN GIANT BLASTER TARGET SET

The HG Toys ALIEN Target Set is one of those legendary toys that hardly ever cross mortal hands.

The first time I became aware of it was in Andy Foley's TV Toy Zone catalogue around 1990. That was just a picture.

I then saw the real thing on the toy fair stall of the late Mr. Star Wars Jim Stevenson, a legend himself.

This example was on Worthpoint so I saved the pics.

Has anyone got an alien target?

ALIEN ATTACK: SPACEX CLONE WARS

 I'm always chuffed when I see the HG Toys copies of the Tri-ang SpaceX cruisers.

They came in brown and silver hard plastic.

I saw these on Ebay where they sometimes turn up. I saved the pics.

The card scenery which formed the basis of the HG Alien Attack set looks great. Golden age styling!

The set came with figures too. These sets were still available in 1980, a good 10 years after the SpaceX Cruiser came and went I think.

Are there any SpaceX copies anywhere later than 1980?

I never tire of seeing Spacex clones. Here's one, on an old auction site, we've seen before, the silver Pleasure Cruiser, which came as part of the Alien Attack boxed set by HG Toys.

Anyone got the whole boxed set or maybe just the silver clone? The one I have is brown.

ALIEN ATTACK!

Playsets have always been a staple of toy marketing. All your favourites bundled together in a cool box. Swordies like me dream of the re-emergence of the Project SWORD Moonbase playset. In the meantime there are lots of fine space sets to keep us amused. Of particular interest to SpaceXers is this ALIEN ATTACK playset by those Seventies toymeisters HG TOYS, who also gave us the legendary Godzilla Playset and Alien Target Sets.

ALIEN ATTACK is a hotch-potch of Buck Rogers and other stuff packaged up to doubtless cash-in on the success of Star Wars. The SpaceX interest comes in the form of the silver/grey spaceship centre-right in the top picture, which is a simple clone of Tri-ang's SpaceX Pleasure Cruiser pictured on its card below. Looking at the HG box art I see that there's also a gold coloured cruiser too. It shows two cruisers. Were there two of them in a set? I keep looking out on feebay for a loose one as the shipping for a whole set is astronomical from the States to the UK.

The delta design is a popular one for space toys and here's another cruiser-like miniature from Japan. Probably a Glico or Morinaga candy premium.
