THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

 I keep seeing more and more futuristic tail-lights on UK roads at night.

Here for instance is a Lexus with its snazzy and hypnotic red strip.

But the old designers had it taped.

Check out the lamps on this American icon, the Mercury Cougar.

Not bad I hear you say.

Well let's talk business and check out the awesomeness of the Lancia Stratos Zero.

Its the rear end of the century with strip lighting all the way round.

and even more candela on the modern remake's back light.

But for luminous cool we can do no better than look into the big and small screen for true illumination.

and the non-lit magnificence of Straker's car from UFO

and the crown of all rears, UFO's Forster's car.

A curvaceous louvred marvel!

I saw this earlier in the year on Ebay and thought, Wow! now that's a ceiling light! Is it something that you would hang up there Moonbasers?

I took this shot lead down looking up at a lampshade. I dunno, I just liked it!

My favourite lampshade picture - at least i think its a kind of lampshade-type prop - is Mel Birnkrant's card art for the Colourforms Outerspacemen.

I love Alpha 7's illuminated disc as he heads for Mars. Looking underneath it the disc really does hint at lampshadeness.

and my personal fave, the large lampshade-like personal airship of Xodiac, the Man from Saturn.

I saw this pic online.

My Mum and Dad had one on the staircase landing. I thought it would blast-off one day!

I remember the orange plastic was a scratchy coarse material.

Hi Woodsy.

After reading your article about the Rocket Pen from Hoboken, I searched my house for household Space items.

The best I could find was a set of Star Wars glasses and a tin of Star Wars cotton swabs. A few other items are open to interpretation.

A glittery night light that could be a rocket,and a utility light that looks suspiciously like a Light Saber!-

Puppet House Lights

I took this snap of a toy Sylvanian family doll house through our front window last night. I liked the silhouette.

It recalls similar creepy dolls houses.

One I half remember is a TV series where the camera followed miniature people inside a doll's house. It was at the start of each episode with the theme music. I had thought it was Thriller from the 70's but its not, I checked. Any ideas?

Another creepy house with lit windows was the Aurora Addam's Family House model kit. My brother had the original one in the late Sixties, which I remember at home.

I had a modern re-issue - in the 90's I think. Alas I sold it but I did have fun making it and trying out torches inside it! The model contained small glow ghosts on moving levers, which came to the door and the windows. Great fun! Did you have one readers?

All these lighted windows remind me of that neat device on the covers of Gothic Romance paperbacks. There's always one light left on upstairs as the damsel runs away from the old dark house!

I do love a lighted window in winter, maybe lit by a candle.

LIGHT RELIEF

Catching the odd few minutes of Space 1999 now and then on TV this month I was really impressed with the lamps on the desks of Moonbase Alpha.

Turns out they were design classics by Nemo Sorella.

They really added extra futurism to the space-age sets of Space 1999.

I wonder which shop got the order from Century 21?

Another 'famous' lamp is one I actually found at a car boot sale and later sold as part of a vintage lamp sale I had on Ebay in 2005.

It was a white telescopic plastic lamp which folded together into a handy brick that could be carried.

its finest hour has to have been shedding light on Freddy Mercury's piano keys during his Bohemian Rhapsody promo video. You can it here to the left sticking out like a an antenna.

It wasn't my personal lamp on Freddy's video I hasten to add! If only!
