A SPACEX/ GOLDEN ASTRONAUT COLOURING BOOK?

Recalling Scoop's ace collection of colouring books last month, I was lamenting the fact that that Triang SpaceX/ Golden Astronaut never did one, a colouring book. I'd have loved it as a kid.

Thinking about it, there are quite a few SpaceX-style line drawings in other colouring books to probably create one!

The Man on the Moon colouring books contain quite a few - which Wotan Bill found - and I think there are more finds on the blog of SpaceX-style line drawings.

There's also new-fangled online trickery which allows you to convert pictures to line drawings. Here's a sketchy backing card one I did this morning.

If such a Triang SpaceX/ Golden Astronaut colouring book existed then it would need a cover.

GOLDEN ASTRONAUT BILLY BLASTOFF

I saw this golden Billy Blastoff on auction last year and kept the images. It could be part of the South American version, Capitan Boy.

Its a new one on me and I cant decide if the body has simply been painted white to gold by a previous owner. Maybe not/

I like this golden Billy. It sort of fits with the whole Golden Astronaut vibe too.

Looking at it again I'm wondering if its the really tiny version of Billy from South America called Mini Capitan Boy.

Here's the Space Explorer set by Roxy, a flagrant rip-off of Multiple Toymakers Golden Astronaut and Triang's SpaceX toy lines.

I've always liked the little pink space car in the middle. I had one many years ago.

This Space and Beyond baggy contains Golden Astronaut aplenty for just $2.99

Last but not least, the gorgeous Surveyor 2, boxed as part of the Golden Astronaut range.

I wonder if there really were 'engineer's drawings'?

ED'S GOLDEN ASTRONAUT TOYS

Even though I've been concentrating on my 3-rail O-gauge trains for some time now, that doesn't mean I'm not in the game when it comes to other collecting activity. I've just slowed down a bit is all!

Anywho, when this job lot came up for only $39.99, I jumped on it! As you well know, anything SpaceX/Golden Astronaut related is going for stupid sums nowadays and in today's market, this lot was a bargain. 

The Pleasure Cruiser is an empty hull (no doubt cannibalized to repair other cruisers) but the others are fairly intact. 

The Lift Loader is good to go as is, the Mobile Moon HQ could use its front disc (or not - who's to say it's not a variant?), and the Terrain Tiger needs a hook. 

 There is one figure and several odd spare parts. 

One of my goals this year is to cobble together a lunar/alien landscape for photographing my small-to-medium (aka 25mm-60mm sized figure range) toys. We shall see!

GOLDEN BEAR ASTRO VENTURE SPACE SET

 I like this modern set. Check out the video. Do you like it?

The housing module really recalls the similar modules in the fabled Moonbase Play Set of the Project SWORD range.

This modern Golden Bear set may work well with Golden Astronaut SpaceX toys! What do you reckon? Wrong scale?

IN FOR A PENNEY

 

I've always liked this 60's Penney's catalogue page from the States, largely because it pictures two distinctively different Golden Astronaut colours, namely the yellow Space Command and the blue Nuclear Pulse.

Personally I prefer these Penney colours. Do you or did you have them?

Hi Woodsy,

Liked your post about the Gold Astronaut Super Set recently.

Here are a couple of photos of my Super Set, including a close up of the front of the vac-formed moonscape base showing the printed dots, plus a shot of the reverse of the base, showing its "natural" purple colour.

I've often wondered why the GA set's moonscape was done in purple, whereas the Spacex version was a more realistic white-light blue. Suppose the manufacturers figured that American kids in the late 60s wanted brighter colours?

I've also attached a pic of the Super Set I found on Worthpoint with a different box top, which appears to have two cut-outs. 

 Not sure how this would have worked in real life, as open cut-outs would allow the toys within to fall out!! 

 Maybe they were originally filled with cellophane (or maybe a past owner did their own modification?).

GOLDEN ASTRONAUT SUPER SET: WOW!

This is one great box of goodies, the Golden Astronaut Super Set from 1969.

This example was on Worthpoint. There have been a few.

I like the box art. Do you?

The moonscape is odd. It looks like an optical hand-painted illusion!

Anyone had or got this Super Set?

In my strange monster-mashed brain that moonscape reminds me the face on the cover of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine #8!

MYSTERY SPACE TOWER

This old bunch of Tri-ang SpaceX and Moon Traffic toys appeared on Worthpoint ages ago. 

But what is the silver and blue space tower at the top and the small red and green button things at the bottom?

Oddly enough there was a Golden Astronaut cardboard Space-Port Tower advertised in the Multiple Toymakers catalogue 1971.

JAPANESE OMAKE ASTRONAUTS

A while back I found this picture of a yellow LP style astronaut on Yahoo Japan. He's the character we nicknamed Party Four I think. I wondered if he was some sort of small gift, like a vending toy. In Japan small vending and candy toys are called Omake.

Well, it looks like my hunch was correct. Here's a bunch of omake with their box and look who's standing tall at the rear. Yep, our friend who I think we called Jack Hammer on account of his road drill. 

The little grey car even looks a bit like the front end of FAB1. Two whistles and a fish complete the bundle of joy. Picture courtesy of Yahoo Japan too.

AMERICAN GOLDEN ASTRONAUT ADVERTISEMENTS

I've just been looking at these old American catalogue adverts I have in my archive of Golden Astronaut. The above one, which I believe is from 1969, features what appears to be a light coloured Tri-ang SpaceX Forklift 7, when it clearly states in the Launch Site Set that the model is the Lift Loader.

Below we have another advert for the US toy line but this time the dark blue Liftloader. I think the same case can be made for Tractor T5 too. Maybe even the MEV2 but the names on the toys are hard to read.

Is this just a timing issue where Multiple only had Tri-ang toys to hand at the start?

Its interesting to note that the colour advert includes the blue version of the Nuclear Pulse and the yellow version of Space Patrol 1. Where these available outside of America? Indeed was Golden Astronaut available in the same markets as Tri-ang SpaceX?

THE LESSER OF TWO BEVELS: MULTIPLE AND IMPERIAL TOYS

I recently saw these old toys by Multiple Toymakers and noticed the printed frame marks on the packaging. These marks give the actual toy blister area a raised beveled look.

It reminds of the similar bevel effect on the packaging of Apollo Moon Exploring by Imperial Toy Corp, which we know is in part a ripoff of Multiple's Golden Astronaut line.

Could this be another example of how Imperial knocked-off Multiple Toymakers' Golden Astronaut toys do you think readers?

I've just found out from the author that Issue 67 of the US Playset magazine carries an article about Golden Astronauts, the American SpaceX toy line.

CANDY PREMIUM LP GOLDEN ASTRONAUT FROM ARGENTINA 1965

This is interesting. A small scale LP type astronaut from Argentina. Its 28mm tall [ is that the same scale as Spacex Golden Astronaut?] and looks fairly crudely made although the original paintwork does look to be golden. It came as a premium with a caramel sweet by CANDOMBE during the 1960's. In fact the Ebay listing states its date as 1965. Were there really LP style astronauts around that far back and are there any other candy premium LP spacemen like this?
