With Summer coming to an end, I have made an effort to visit nearby beach resort towns like Wildwood and Ocean City, New Jersey.

MY TOXIC SLIME

 For my birthday in December I got some Badedas.

Its a lurid green bubble bath gel made from chestnuts and smells of pine forests.

Wonderful stuff!

The bright green colour does call to mind toxic waste though.

As it happens I was discussing the sweet Toxic Waste with a youngster last month. he told me that there was nothing sourer in the world and that it could actually melt your tongue!

It is Hazardously Sour Candy after all! Do you know it?

A possible prop for sci-fi B movies and model dioramas, I'll leave the sweet Waste alone and stick to bathing in my own green Badedas slime!

A JOB FOR T-5

The crisis in the planet's green slime pit got worse until the company's best T-5 pilot arrived, albeit very late, to pull the capsule free just before it set hard. The plot thickens.

The Slime Under the Stairs

Spending time with our Grandson Moonbase Junior reminds me of how I imagine my own childhood must have been when I was 3. I have no memory of it whatsoever, save for a sheaf of old photos, so imagining it through Junior is the best I can do.

Junior loves everything. The world is a glorious garden of excitement and fun. No problems. No worries. No politics. Its a privilege to be in the company of a true human before all the BS messes things up later on.

To illustrate Junior's unabashed adventure into the world he absolutely adores all things slime.

Slime is a thing of beauty to Junior, a marvellous blob of clammy joy. His passion for slime is a broad church: ready made pots of goo, powdered slime sachets that need water and that old fave, bouncing putty. All are welcome.

Today it was the turn of glow in the dark slime. We bought it in a museum shop off one of those counters of classic toys like miniature slinkies and kaleidoscopes. He went for the slime like a bee to honey!

We made the stuff as soon as we got home. Packaged in a test tube, it contained a small packet of green powder and  a lolly stick for stirring. The instructions read like something from a lab and scared me to death! There was mention of phosphorous, its discovery and the creation of the philosopher's stone by boiling urine! I didn't read out that bit to Junior!

Junior wasn't phased. He can't read yet. He just wanted to stir the mixture. Along with Missus Moonbase we took turns to shake the tube of diluted powder off and on for 10 minutes.

When the moment arrived to release the kraken so to speak Junior was beside himself. He poured the thick green gloop straight out onto a plastic plate. "It doesn't glow!" he protested.

"We have to light it up with your torch first!" I explained. We proceeded to drape the goo over a small hand-torch like something out of Quatermass.

After a few minutes we took the blob and put in the dark cupboard under the stairs and yep, it glowed like a silicate from a Hammer horror. Junior was suitably impressed and the allure of slime goes on.

The glowing stuff, however, will decay in four days and turn to liquid!

OOZE-IT: PLUG MY SLIME UP!

Brian's Krusher plug got me thinking about another plugged toy, the elusive Ooze-It, which I've discussed with Arto before a few years back.

Rather than air, Ooze-It was filled with red goop, which would ooze out of various head orifices, if unplugged, when the green figure was firmly squeezed!

The green guy is clearly part of the slime craze, which continues to this day. 

There's a description of the uber-rare Ooze-It on Stretch Armstrong World as he's classed as a distant cousin of the Stretch family. 

Sadly Krusher isn't in the index. Too much hot air I expect. You need syrup or slime to get in.

And further to your article on "The Studio" My wife Marilyn who is an illustrator and miniaturist was deeply impressed by this book before we met and showed it to me as a source of inspiration. 

We used it as such in our Sci Fi artists' commune in the early 1980's and later it was at the back of our minds when we finally built our dream home/studio in the Blue Mountains of NSW. Here are a few shots of it...

Talking of the Green Slime on the radio put me in mind of a boxed set I once found at a car boot sale in the Nineties, the He-Man Evil Horde Slime Pit Playset by Mattel.

Here's the TV ad from the Eighties via You Tube.

Did you have this set or do you collect He-Man toys now?

Just seen this Japanese clip on You Tube of what I assume is the built-up Midori Green Slime spaceship.

Or is it a scratchbuild?

It appears to be remote controlled and looks quite big!

We know this ship better as the toy SpaceX LT-10.

the green slime rifle and the starcruiser mission toy kit

Whilst browsing for GiFs I saw this one from the movie Green Slime, the movie which included a spaceship which likely inspired the toy SpaceX LT10. When I saw the space gun I thought - I've seen that before! Its clunky shape reminded me of a toy rifle.

This is it, the rifle shown below in this boxed Gerry Anderson's Starcruiser Mission Kit by Thomas Salter Toys. Now I don't have this toy so I can't be certain of its size. Its sort of similar but not quite the same. 

Can anyone do a comparison of the movie rifle and the toy itself if you own one?

WOULD YOU HAVE SLIMED YOUR TOYS?

I'm pretty sure I had a pot of Mattel Green Slime when I was a wee nipper. You know, that wet cold lime-green goo that would stretch and lengthen in your hands. It smelt sweet I think but that bits vague. It felt like liver.

Some games made use of slime. Mattel had a Slime Monster game and later had He-Man or Hordak sliming up the place.

But did you ever pour your green slime over your toys readers? It would have filled a Fab 1 or gelled up an Action Man something rotten! And what about Play Dough and slime! Yuk!

Was slime never to be played with near other toys? Waddaya think readers?

The Green Slime Are Coming!

"Get everyone outta here!"

To coincide with Wotan's visit to Moonbase Central last weekend I had bookmarked a couple of You Tube movies for our viewing pleasure. Owing to time constraints, we didn't get to see them so here's the first one, The Green Slime. The Green Slime was made by Teoi Studios of Japan in 1968 at the height of the space craze. Made into both Japanese and US versions, this is the longer version aimed at US audiences, which includes a 'love triangle'. The 'Green Slime' monsters were actually rubber suits worn by children!

The basic plot is as follows. Spacemen set out to stop an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. They plant explosive charges on it and destroy it. Afterwards they return to Gamma 3 in orbit around the Earth. Unfortunately a green substance returned with them which mutate into one-eyed monsters discharging lethal bolts of electricity. The crew fend off the aliens with lasers, only to discover the creatures feed off them which, in turn, allows them to multiply, sprouting the new creatures from their blood. The crew continue to fight back against overwhelming odds......[summary of Wiki]. Like a crazy Hammer cross between Thunderbirds and Star Trek, I call it Project SpaceX .v. The Rubber Squids !

The Green Slime is of interest to space toy nuts like us because of the models used in the film. The initial space rocket looks like the white rocket found in LP and Imperial Apollo Moon Exploring toy sets and appears after a couple of minutes. Their is also a large ring space station, Gama 3, in the vein of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

But the main event is the transporter, which takes the crew to the asteroid. It's the LT-10 Luna Transporter from the Tri-ang SpaceX range, which appeared a couple of years later as part of the SpaceX II series and is pictured below with the green tip. Midori of Japan also released it in kit form - box shown below - and and both the toy and kit have featured on the blog many times as it really is a beautiful space vehicle design. In the film it appears around 12.28 minutes and is launched into space around 15.48 minutes.

The space rifles are also very cool and I wonder of they were produced as toys as well? Anyway, enjoy! And remember, you have been slimed!
