I love these old stamps from Manama I saw on Ebay.
They're called Apollo 16.
Some of the spacecraft look familiar to us. The rocket is a lot like a NOVA. the space station was released as a neat Kellogs model, which some of you may have had. The red space glider reminds me of the one in the film Marooned. My favourite craft is the one top right, the long stick-like space station, which would have made a decent SpaceX toy would you say?
Do you like these stamps?
Nice stamps. I did not recognise Manama as a country, so looked it up. Seems it is a town in Ajman, one of the former Trucial States in the Persian Gulf, now part of the United Arab Emirates. In the 1960s (and early 1970s ?) they produced a large number of stamp sets aimed at collectors, including this one. The stamps appear to have Manama - Dependency of Ajman on them.
ReplyDeleteThe red craft in the centre looks like one of the NASA Lifting Bodies, perhaps the M2-F2 as it does not appear to have a centre fin ? The one on the lower right, with the astronauts stepping out of a helicopter, clearly shows the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King used for space capsule recovery, as modelled by Dinky and Airfix.
So its the UAE Paul. Thanks for that. Ajman have released some beautiful space stamps as well. I once spent a week looking for space stamps online and blogged the results a few years back. Amazingly many of the toys that featured in the Tri-ang SpaceX range 1970 also fearured as spacecraft on these stamps. So inspired was I that I made my own stamps using the Royal Mail Make a Smiler online service. Not legal tender but can be stuck alonsgide normal stamps. You could put any image on them. Great fun!
