Although many of the female related toys sold throughout the 1960s were of interest to boys too certain items in the various lines were of course 'Girl Specific'. Many of the make-up, adornment and grooming products were avoided by boys like the plague and I doubt, for example, back in 1967 many young lads wanted a Lady Penelope Tea Service (Although I know a few adult male collectors who would sell a vital organ for one now!!) The Angels Sling Bag is very much a 'Girl Specific' item and I personally remember by sister having one in the 1960s. Made of strong vinyl the bag, sold in two colour variants, is in fact very well produced and exactly like a bag a 'grown up lady' would have used but scaled to juvenile proportions. The Angels brand logo is the one which appeared on the Jon Davis drawn strip of the same name seen in LADY PENELOPE comic as well as other merchandise of the period.
This 1968 ad from TV21 gave readers the low-down on the latest items available from CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS. Looking to be drawn by TV21 artist, and Century 21 creative art manager, Jim Watson the ad makes mention of an Angels Playsuit that the sling bag would admirably compliment. So far no firm information has ever surfaced relating to the suit so it is likely that only the bags were actually released. A large shop stock find in the 1980s flooded the collector market for these bags but since then fewer have been seen for sale so I would advise any 'SCARLET' enthusiast to grab one at a reasonable price should they see one as they are a novel and colourful addition to any collection..
