I chanced upon this online snap of an old wreck found in a barn.
I had to find out what that amazing design was.
Turns it it was called the Box Brubaker.
What a van-car!
How totally futuristically-Hot Wheels-looking is that!
Incredibly the Box Brubaker has had a comeback too. Here's the Brubaker promo pic.
What do you think? The van-car for you?
Great design. Curious that the body and paintwork on the one in the field looks knackered beyond belief but the tyres are in good fettle and inflated!
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean Kev!
DeleteThe Brubaker Box was actually used in the 1970s Sci-Fi Kid's show "Ark II"
ReplyDeletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_II
Ark II was a 6 wheeled futuristic mobile laboratory, which carried the "Ark Roamer" as an auxillury in the back. The Roamer was a modified Brubaker Box.
I dunno how well the show aged, but the vehicles were definitely cool!
How neat is that Scott!
DeleteGroovy with a capital G! SFZ
ReplyDeleteHa ha!
DeleteBy the way, speaking of Cars, inspired by some of the articles here, I used the Man From UNCLE Piranha car in my comc strip recently:

And today I slipped the Major Matt Mason "Firebolt Space Cannon" and the "Helijet" from Thunderbirds in the comic:

So, thanks for the inspiration guys!
Cool cartoons Scott! Great stuff! Is that Cap Lazers light-up chest disc on your character too? Love the Lazer Canon. And helijet!
DeleteThank you! :)
DeleteYeah, that's Cap Lazer... sort of, inspired to fit into the story.
That's the bad guy trying to make his escape.
We'll see.
Part of the joke is the main character is much shorter than everyone here, so he's Major Matt Mason sized vs Captain Lazer sized. :)
Wow. Never saw one or even heard of it. Yet as a kid I remember seeing dune buggies built on VW chassis. Wish I could have a new one.
ReplyDeleteThey sound great Baron!
DeleteThat car's shape hit an instant chord with me. Unfortunately Google isn't helping me ID this vehicle, but... I think it was featured in the 1975 Rollerball film. There was only one vehicle seen, owned by the very rich. It was interesting because it was small, implying that resources in the future of 2018 were so stretched, even the rich couldn't drive Cadillacs.
ReplyDeleteHmmm maybe I need to rewatch that flick...
Definitely re-watch 75 Rollerball, it's one of my favorite movies! But if the Brubaker is in it, I don't recall. This is what I found online: The design of the vehicle was so futuristic it was used extensively on the on the popular television show “Ark II.” The Brubaker Box also appeared in the 1973 film “Soylent Green,” and the 1995 film “Grid Runners.”
DeleteMaybe I'm thinking of Soylent Green. It's a while since I saw either movie!
DeleteI love Soylent Green! What a movie! I never looked at biscuits in the same way again!
DeleteA very nice vehicle. According to the Wikipedia page for the Brubaker Box, it was based on the chassis of the Volkswagen Beetle, but only a small number were built in the 1970s. That explains the small size.
ReplyDeleteHardly surprising that it turned up in a number of science fiction movies and TV shows, with looks like that.
Its a cool looking roadster for sure! Vantastic!
