As a youngster I loved my comics. My earliest memories are of my mum picking up a copy of TV Comic with the free gift of a cut out and fold Supercar .
Other comics close to my nostalgic heart are TV Century 21, Joe 90 (Top Secret) and Countdown.
I also enjoyed picking up the odd issue of Valiant, Tiger, and Lion. My brother preferred Sparky, Beano and Dandy, with the occasional Beezer and Topper. and we both always looked forward to reading their Christmas editions.
Here's a selection of covers that might jog some nostalgic memories.
Holy cow, what an amazing array of lovely comic covers! Nothing remotely like that in the US at the time, I'm afraid. These are just glorious, and would have given any kid a fit of ecstasy!
ReplyDeleteI loved my comics growing up in the sixties and early seventies, Zigg. Sadly, traditional British comics have lost most of their popularity over the years, and are all but gone here in the UK, with just a few independent publishers struggling on. I still occasionally pick up D.C. Thompson's 'Commando' pocket book comic, which have always tried to be factually correct within their fictional war stories. Unfortunately, that seems to be changing, as they now appear to beginning to pander to more modern readers, with stories about soldiers apparently fighting zombies! That kind of story does have it's place, of course, but not in 'Commando' comic - what next? Harry Potter; the Military Years!
DeleteThank you for Dandy with Korky the Cat, and memories from simpler times.
ReplyDeleteI suspect most people in the UK learned to read in their earlier years, enjoying Dandy and Beano comics, Terra, and you're absolutely right, simpler times, how we miss them,
