Hi Woodsy! This is one of the few Sci-Fi kits I’ve been able to get to in 2022. It’s a 1967 Midori model kit from Japan, Space Ship Mercury, released in Canada and the U.S. in 1969 by our old friend Paramount Hobbies.
I had one of these about 10 years ago, but I donated it to a toy museum in Japan. I was lucky enough to stumble on another copy about five years ago on eBay, which was way underpriced, as it was the Canadian release, sold without the Mabuchi motor.
So here is Space Ship Mercury 2.0 for your enjoyment. I tried to paint this version a bit closer to the scheme on the beautiful cover art. Another impossible design from the Golden Age of Japanese Science Fiction. Propellers in outer space - why not!?

That is a beautiful model, and a very good paint finish. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words Paul, I had fun with this one. My first time trying acrylic metallic paint (as opposed to enamels).
Deletea lovely job as ever Rob, but what a weird design!
ReplyDeleteWeird is right! You know, when I first saw this model at a department store in 1970, I passed on it, because to my logical teenage mind it was so dumb - a propeller boat in outer space! Of course, as an (sort of) adult, I can appreciate the craft's sheer implausibility.
