Do I wish I'd started making toys earlier? I've been trying for twelve years to do just that, but my manufacturing technique wasn't good enough for limited production. The advent of 3D modelling, scanning and 3D resin printing has been a complete game changer.
I was looking at my Peregrine Besset prototype character toy (on the far left) and I was shocked to see it's dated February this year! I've only been 3D printing for 18 months and DIY scanning since April this year -Amazing!
I still haven't got my joint technology up to the level l want for limited toy production, but I'm using my Magnaballs magnetic joints system so i can at least make posable figures that sort of qualify as toys!
Many thanks to the people who inspire me and keep me going, like all you Moonbasers and my new found Art Toy friends in Melbourne.
The Looey Adventure is just beginning!

A question from your earlier post about the 'Skeletags'.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by 'tag' Looey ?
Tagging is street slang for Graffitti. I'd been trying unsucessfully to make Japanese style soft vinyl toys, but the technical problems of making metal moulds beat me in the end. The organizer of Not a Toy Shop came to visit me. He tried to convince me to do one more attempt, something to do with skeletons.
ReplyDeleteUltimately I didn't have the puff to keep banging my head against the same brick wall, so i chose the whole new brick wall of 3D printing!
In order to appeal to the edgy, street smart customers of the shop, i decided to include themes of Graffitti artists, skateboarding and doom! (I'm also currently planning a skeleton scooter version, because my wife and I actually ride them a lot!)
You can scroll back through my toy making attempts on my Instagram page. As i say, "This isn't toy manufacture, it's Performance Art!"

A cauldron of creativity over there in Oz it is! Fab work Looey! Those skeletons are out of the cupboard!
DeleteSo tagging is making graffiti art.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea, but then I'm 62 and live in 'middle UK' (which Is like 'middle America', but with a King).
Just to add that, as an almost former SFX man myself, I really admire your efforts at developing your 'toy' projects, and think your ideas are both creative and dynamic. I wish I had your tenacity ...and balls !
ReplyDeleteHere here!
