These two occasions, which bubble up just before the Christmas season kicks in, have waxed and waned in popularity in my opinion. Halloween is on the rise and Bonfire Night is going out. I might be wrong though. What do you think?
Personally I do engage in the spirit of Halloween each year, at home, with a few monster toys and some spooky TV, but I don't bother with Bonfire Night in any way anymore. It was however huge when I was a kid and was a big deal for my family in early November.
Are these two events important to you readers?
Is there something else happening before Xmas in your neck of the woods?
Bonfire night is not officially observed in the U.S.,But November in the Northeastern U.S. is an ideal time to light a fire. Its something that I've always done with family and friends, but usually in backyards, not on the streets.Thanksgiving is the third Thursday in November, and it features a large family dinner.Turkey is the most popular choice, but Ham,Oysters,or Roast Beef are all possible variations. Not everyone in the States celebrates Thanksgiving, but my family always has.Students are usually home from school from Thanksgiving through the following Sunday.I also sometimes get the 4 day weekend depending on where I work and how busy we are. After that, its all about Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI love your family cuisine Brian! Hams, turkeys, oysters! I wish I had an American friend here in the UK who celebrated Thanksgiving and invited me round for dinner!
DeleteBonfire Night was huge when I was a kid, but Halloween is definitely bigger now.
ReplyDeleteThat said, my birthday, which is in late October, has always been the most important Autumn event for me.
Happy belated Birthday greetings Mish! I hope it was a grand do!
DeleteI'm a fan of Halloween, Woodsy. I also like Bonfire Night. Although around here, the old back garden 'family and friends' gatherings of childhood seem few and far between. They've mostly been replaced by large commercial extravaganzas, organised by the city council and local business. Changing times.
ReplyDeleteGiven today's antics in Westminster you have to wonder where Guy Fawkes is when he's needed?
ReplyDeleteHe turned up in his thousands this weekend Terran. Oddly enough, I visited the Fawkes family graveyard a few years back in Otley in Leeds.
