I've always been interested in figures of speech - you know, metaphors, alliteration and all that - so I was mightily amused when I came across the Tom Swifty.
The Tom Swifty is named after the space adventure books featuring Tom Swift by Victor Appleton II, like the one shown:
The Tom Swifty seems to me to pay homage to the dering-do of these books and at the same time parodying them.
An example would be: "We just struck oil!" Tom gushed, the oil and gushed making the pun work. Another I like is "We must hurry" said Tom swiftly! ha ha. This even puns on his surname!

Can you make up a Tom Swifty or two readers?
I'm inclined to take the ramp, not the steps.
ReplyDeleteLove it Kev! that might be a Wellerism rather than a Tom Swifty but who knows [I think a Swifty needs a verb to describe how somethings's said]. This is an example of a Wellerism: "I stand corrected" said the man in the orthopedic shoes! ha ha
Delete"I love the way you dribble your food" drooled Tom.
ReplyDeleteThey just happened that Orca, he wailed.
ReplyDeleteThat was harpooned, not happened
ReplyDeleteI've hit my last cricket ball he declared.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't win at Tiddly Winks, he countered.
ReplyDeleteI poured it from that laboratory glassware he retorted.
ReplyDeleteIt was when I was walking up that hill, he rambled.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'll stop now!
ReplyDelete"It all adds up in the end, I reckon."
ReplyDeletesaid Tom.
ha ha! You're on a roll Kev!
ReplyDeleteTom read the Space Food Manual thoroughly, digesting all the contents.
ReplyDeleteMish.
That reckoning one was by me.
ReplyDeleteMish.

ReplyDelete"I'm on a roll" warmed the old dog.
