I've started noticing this really cool Seaspy frogman toy for some reason.
Different examples are on various auction archives.
The box art is superb, like an oil painting or a an old Christmas card!
Its a Monosub Diver by a maker I don't know. The maker's mark is pictured below.
Here's the same Seaspy with different box art.
Originally Thunderball inspired, all these Seaspy's appear to be knockoffs of the Imai James Bond Jetski seen here in a bath.
I'm always amazed when modellers actually test their creations in water!
Anyone got any frogman toys readers?
Only real frogman toy I had, not counting GI Joe scuba sets, was the Placo Flippy the Frogman toy. He's been mentioned several times on the blog here as he shares the mold (with slight modifications)as an aquarium scuba ornament. I have him still (yellow body, black tank) and somewhere still have my submarine (yellow) from Placo as well.
ReplyDeleteFlippy is a blog legend Lance. A hard working frogman. Maybe we should all wear a rubber suit and face mask like Flippy in the current global calamity! Hope your'e staying safe and healthy in Houston.
DeleteThat is a really nice toy. I had a Timpo inflatable boat with two frogmen, and a Human Torpedo mini-sub which I think was by Britains. There was also a deep sea diver on a mechanical fish, which always reminded me of Stingray. I will see if I can find them, and send in some photos. Just remembered, I once had an American pen-friend, and in the 1970s he sent me an Addar Super Scenes kit of Jaws, with a diver in a shark cage, and a large Great White Shark, in a plastic bottle. This was another kit line that I never saw in NZ, and this is the only Addar kit I ever had.
ReplyDeleteAddar! Wow! They are featured in my Fantastic Plastic model kits book and I've never seen them in the flesh. the Jaws bottle looks cool. Have you still got it Paul? Coincidentally I watched Jaws 3D last night with Dennis Quaid, which I've always liked but was shocked to see it was voted worst film of the year when it came out!
DeleteI had the Stingray model with the attachable plastic motor underneath. Never got it to work in the bath. Also, the smaller Stingray model, with the rubber band-powered propeller. No luck with that either. Plus, I hated getting my pretty models all wet!
ReplyDeleteYou had a lot of Stingrays Zigg. All from the same toy shop? Still got them? Stay safe in Connecticut.
DeleteYes, I still have the Addar Jaws kit, and its box - somewhere. If/when I find them I will send in some photos. These were very simple kits, but nicely made. I wish these kits had made it to NZ, as I would have liked to get some of the others they did, such as Planet of the Apes, the WW1 dogfight, or the Apollo/Soyuz space set. These kits are covered in Aurora Model Kits by Thomas Graham, Schiffer, 2004. I know what you mean, Jaws is the only Addar kit I have ever seen, I guess few made it outside the US.
