Hi Woodsy,
pertaining to your recent Rock Climbers post and especially to the fabulous Merit Everest game that was all new to me, sending you photos of the very similar Finnish game Himalaya from 1960.
It might a version of a Danish original, though I have not been able to find one online [nor another Finnish example.]
There are numerous obstacles along the way to the top: glacier, snow blindness, fog, avalanche, thin air - and Yeti of course!
Arto
I don't remember any of the fantastic vintage climbing games which have been so well spotlighted on the blog. I seem to have missed out. I do like the design of this Arto. It's also very colourful, imaginative and more importantly for any kid like me, it has a Yeti. I'm also drawn to the period box illustration which sets the scene for high altitude adventure :)
ReplyDeleteI agree Tone, these are brilliant games. When I fitrst saw Arto's set i thought it was an Action Man on the box art! I'm pretty sure I've seen a photo of Action Man climbing on a rock face just like that! Himalaya is from 1960. What a beautiful thing to have have survived 60 years!
DeleteThanks guys. I hope this does not curb your excitement Tony, but Yeti appears only in writing in the game instructions. It would have been great though to have a plastic Yeti figure in addition to the five climbers, roaming about!
ReplyDeleteThis whole concept of taking a board game and creating it in 3D befitting the subject matter intrigues me immensely. Another intriguing aspect of the game is its box art photo - a rather uncommercial scene with a (female?) climber, which looks almost like a tourist snapshot.
Very sorry to hear there were no plastic Yeti with the game. Still you could add your own, if you could find some suitable figures. Paint a toy gorilla white ? Not much information on the box top, not even that it is a game, as far as I can see. These mountain games look like great fun, especially the moulded plastic mountain shown earlier.
