I found these ads in a Batman comic from 1973.
I must admit I've never come across these little beauties before. Were they ever released in the UK?
It looks great. The Skeleton in the box apparently pops out and stabs the map using 'Zap Action'!
Apart from the films and the theme park ride they're based on, I had no idea that 'The Pirates..' had a longer history.
Beautiful models them Scoop. I saw them the first time way back in the 1990's when I got the book Toys of the Sixties by Bill Breugman. Then I got Classic Plastic and there's a whole section on them. I think there may have been a Disneyland ride of the same name, Pirates of the Caribbean. They remind me of my older bother's Aurora kit, the Forgotten Prisoner of Castlemare, which he had in the Sixties. These Pirates models crossover into the collecting of Aquarium treasure chests, skeletons and frogmen like those made by Penn Plax, far too glorious to be shoved in a fish tank!
ReplyDeleteYeah, lovely models. I don't recall ever seeing them in the UK, but I did get the Forgotten Prisoner of Castlemare by Aurora. I had it on display in my bedroom, It used to glow in the dark. A bit scary if you had to get up in the night, and in the blackness all you saw was a screaming skull!!
ReplyDeleteTo answer a very old question - yes, they did release these in the UK. I remember having the Dead Men Tell No Tales kit. And great news, Lindbergh (actually Polar Lights) have just re-released the Dead Man's Raft model as "Hex Marks the Spot" - let's hope it's the first of many / all ?!!!!

Very interesting that Jeff. Thanks for letting us know about the re-release. We'll no doubt cover it as well soon. I would have loved one of those kits in the Sixties when I was 8!
