Hi Woodsy,
Here's some pics of an old set I had. It was an extra set, and a tad incomplete, and I sold it a couple of years ago. I still have a complete set though awaiting photography at some unknown time. Those vacu-form pieces look nice but are flimsy as heck! Just looking at 'em the wrong way will make them split.
The round command center normally comes with a clear plastic cover (missing from the set in the photos) but these are horribly thin and will deform or rip without provocation. I've been rummaging around The Cave and 'found' some some really cool things I totally forgot I had!

That's a very interesting set, in particular the inclusion of the painted vacu-formed plastic pieces.
ReplyDeleteI'm most curious if such, in particular the dome-covered command section, originated from a different toy-maker's inventory
In the 1970s Marx started including vacu-formed terrain pieces in its playsets. They were easier to make, cheaper, and lighter. As far as I know all vacu-formed pieces in Marx sets are original Marx designs and manufacture.
DeleteWhat a nice looking set! :-) Thanx Woodsy. I did manage to showcase the complete set from 8-12 Oct 2013 on Toys and Stuff. Here's the link to the first part:

Hi Ed, yes, it's yours! You sent me thse pics agaes ago. I've just found a load of messages and pics from various folks, which I've never posted. This is one of 'em! A lovely set, which looks stunning on your own blog I must say! The other great playset maker were HG Toys, who gave us Alien Attack!
ReplyDeleteThere was an HG playset on fleaBay just last week. It was a re-purposed Alien Attack set sold as a Buck Rogers playset with the same flying saucer but different space ships. The guy wanted ONLY $200 - I passed on it :-)
DeleteIn the last two pictures, note the yellow equipment to the left. Especially note the two hatches on the roof.
ReplyDeleteNow see this Frank Tinsley ad from 1959. Note the two hatches on the roof
