To celebrate our 5th Birthday I shall be taking a nostalgic look at how some of my favourite toys appeared on the covers of magazines and posters. In the mid-Sixties Colorforms released their Outer Space Men action figures. There were seven in total. I had them all as a kid and my number one was Orbitron, the ultra cool pink brained man, pictured far left.
The figures were invented by the great Mel Birnkrant, who's website is easilly the best toy history site on the net. In it he remembers how the Metaluna Mutant from the movie This Island Earth influenced the design of Orbitron.
I remember the Metaluna Mutant best from the inside back covers of Creepy, Eerie and Famous Monsters magazines in the Sixties, where he appeared as a mask from the famous Don Post studios, seen here at the top, third along.
Old Metaluna even made it onto the cover of Famous Monsters of Filmland in 2004 [issue 237] to highlight their retro-feature on This Island Earth.
I never Metaluna I didn't like! Cool article.
ReplyDeleteA classic alien monster with exposed brain and crab claws! Fab!
ReplyDeleteI never saw any of these figures at all as a kid and in fact ive never seen one in the flesh still !
ReplyDeleteI had a handful of these as a kid as well, and I loved them. They were rubbery with the bendable wire inside, I think. Wish I had the foresight to save them.
