Browsing the ubercool UFO Series Home Page I noticed this Dinky toys ad from the back of Countdown comic. I had both the UFO interceptor and the Sea King Helicopter as a kid. The Sea King had the niftiest Apollo floating capsule. These were very strong die-cast toys and I imagine there are lots of them still around. I've one in my attic somewhere! You?
I loved 1970's cartoony illustrations in comics like Countdown. Looking at it it does remind me of the black and white spaceX illustrations that were gracing comics circa 1970. What do you think? Was there a King of advert illustrations like this?
I had a sneaking suspicion that the artist behind these Spacex ads was veteran comic illustrator, Arthur Ranson, but apparently not :

Yep, got the interceptor and the sea king. Both later acquisitions but my Shado mobile and Straker's car are mine from when I was a kid.
ReplyDelete1970's Marvel comics in particular had numerous full page 'comic story-ads' using their own characters to promote Hostess Twinkies, Friut Pies, etc. Veteran comic artist, Sal Buscema stated that this was a steady source of income for him.
ReplyDeleteI recall some early G.I.JOE full-colour adventure ads in comics as well; a natural bridge to the 1980's when entire comic books and childrens animated shows were toy-based.
