I so remember this ciggy lighter we had at home in the Sixties. A pirate's flintlock on a wooden stand.
Yep, cigarettes were second only to the telly back then! Ash trays and fancy lighters everywhere!
Was that your experience?

My dad smoked a pipe (he'd been a sailor in WW2) and my older brother smoked cigs.
ReplyDeleteWe had a modern ash tray. When you pressed a button on the top, it sort of spun round and sucked the ash until itself.
My dad got lung cancer, and had to stop. My brother, now 75, still smokes (though not many a day).
Sorry about yer Dad Mish. Both my parents smoked. Like your Dad, my folks were both called up. Mum in the WAF and Dad a sailor too. He was Sparks and the ship barber. They didn't due of smoking but an unhealthy lifestyle of eating well and lots of booze, together with 5 kids did it for them early. Mum was just 56 and Dad 66. I don't smoke but my Missus vapes. It's living with me that makes her!
DeleteI've never smoked.
ReplyDeleteAs a teenager I tried one Gitane and a black Sobrane. That was it!
DeleteOddly, for the time, my parents didn't smoke (they'd given it up 10 years before I was born). It didn't form any part of my childhood, I've never done it and never been remotely tempted.
ReplyDeleteThey did well to give up Kev. It's hellishly difficult. I see it with my Missus. One anti-smoking drug called Ziban hospitalized her, it was quite serious. She vapes now, has done for years. Hope it's not as bad.
DeleteYep. I remember my Mum telling me that my Dad gave it up in one go, no problem but it took her a few attempts to quit.
DeleteI remember the brands my folks smoked: Woodbines and Benson and Hedges later I think. It was advertised on TV constantly as well when we were growing up. The Marlborough Man was almost a living version of my Marx Johnny West figure!
DeleteWoodsy, we had a real fancy pedestal ashtray. It's hard to describe and I don't believe I have photos of it, but the lighter sat in the middle of an ornate ashtray which sat upon a ornately cast metal pedestal. Very '50s and very kitschy!

ReplyDeleteThanks Ed!
DeleteBoth of my grandfathers smoked cigs. My dad's father smoked back in WWI and did so until the end of his life. Dad's mom did not smoke but Dad's sister and brother both smoked. Dad smoked cigs during his service in the Navy as a sub hunter. Sometime later after I came around he switched to a pipe. He quit that in the mid 80s and was smoke free until his passing in 2016. Both of my mom's parents smoked. Her dad smoked during his time in the Navy over in the Pacific during WWII and did so until a few years before his death, finally kicking the habit. His wife smoked with him after the war but gave it up due to the young me tampering with her cigs and that she had cancer. She was cured of the cancer in the early 70s and never smoked again. My mom never smoked. I myself smoked buy only during the 4th of July and New Years Eve as cigs light fireworks much easier than those damn punks you got with the fireworks.
ReplyDeleteGrandpa Aynes worked for and ran his own Firestone store. Back then they had a lot of gift items for sale. My first tricycle and wagon were from FIrestone. I still have the wagon although it has had a hard life. He had a couple of pedestal ashtrays that were rubber tires with a glass insert for the cig and ashes. Sadly I do not have any of those but I do have 4 tabletop ashtrays that are all different styles of tires from Firestone with the glass inserts in them.
I do have a novelty cigarette lighter from A.K.W. It is almost identical to this one https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/akw-perfect-camera-lighter-japanese-3828032301 only the body has a leather cover and it says MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN above the PatPend number.
Fabulous potted history of your family's smoking habits Lance. Fascinating stuff. I love that AKW camera lighter, what a beauty. I remember Firestone stuff. I may had a Firestone tyre keyring as a kid with a compass in the middle.
