Some recent spots and acquisitions in antiques centres, auctions and shops:
The Grouch Couch, bought for the Grandkids. It grumps, growls and eats objects!
Spotted in an auction, I did Watch with Mother and loved all these BBC shows on this Chad Valley projector, but just who is Joe? He I dunno!
Two old sixties soccer annuals for my bro in law, who sadly has Altzheimers. It's his 80th on Sunday and he likes to browse the pictures of football books. He was captain and manager of his team in Leyland.
It's hard to imagine just how famous George Best was back then. A superstar. They called him the fifth Beatle he was so famous!Something a little different and relics from my past, seen in an antiques shop in Balby, these two Mary's or very similar ones graced our home as I was growing up. My Mum was quite a religious lady and the house reflected it. Her purse too, full of relics like Padre Pio's cloth.
Was your Mum or Dad religious?
More Balby bounty, this cabinet held a UFO Interceptor and the wondrous Tow Truck, both of which I adored back in the boomer years.
Now in Wath, I was amazed by this huge plastic toy doll's home cinema outside a charity shop. It reminded me of Looey's! I imagined Action Man and Sindy watching a movie. But which one?
Back in Balby, not sure where this toy train was from but I loved the artwork.
And these old kits caught my eye too. I love that Frog Lifeboat box art!
These massive toy trains by LGB reminded me of my Big Big Train from the Sixties. What a top toy that was!
Finally, I was interested to see the Clifford logo on ..... Children's packs of cards!
Till the next trip ...
I just looked up that Grouch Couch – that is insane. When opened up it has a face, and big teeth. Reminds me of the movie Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, which dined on people.
ReplyDeleteNo idea who Joe is, but I have the Dinky Parsley the Lion and his car. Previously posted on Moonbase.
That large dolls movie theatre is part of the Our Generation range, and I think I might have sent you an article on it some time ago ? Those things are massive. It is not a home cinema, as there is a ticket booth on the outer wall – the curved part with the gold roof.
The Tolato Mozdony train set is Made in Hungary. I think it might be tinplate ?
I would be delighted to add both the Frog Lifeboat and the Life-Like Fishing Trawler to my kit collection.
LGB trains are a lot bigger than Big Big Trains.
You have been busy.
Very interesting Paul. I will have to look up your My Generation material. I do recall Big Big Trains being huge but then again I was a lot smaller back then!
DeleteI actually had a DVD of "Watch With Mother" for many years - what an adorable program that was! SFZ
ReplyDeleteYes, it was a lovely show for pre-Schoolers SF. Was it on in the US?
DeleteOn the projector box, you have Lady Rosemary and Parsley from the Herbs, then Kiki the frog from Hectors House (just behind and above with the cat), the Joe with the dungarees and bowl cut. He was a storyboard style show, which was narrated over still images of the drawings. Pretty dull. Sir Basil from the Herbs is front right with the red nose and the Pogles run across the middle followed by Tog. Pogles Wood and the Herbs were two of my favourite shows! Bill
ReplyDeleteDon't really know Pogles Wood either. The rest, bar Joe, were watched and loved yep.
DeleteForeign train is probably a tinplate hungarian model. ill be needing a fossil kit as im off to Weymouth at the end of the month, fossil hunting! Yay! Bill
ReplyDeleteDont forget your hammer!
DeleteAs far as I can remember, 'Joe' was a still illustration series (i.e. pictures with a narration read over it) about a little boy who gets himself into trouble, by being a bit wayward, and is castigated gently by his parents, every episode, with the narrator saying " "Oh Joe !", said his mother. "Oh Joe !" said his father".
ReplyDeleteI thought it was naff, even as a young kid.
Nope, Joe isn't known to me but thanks Mish. Someone somewhere will have adored it!
