Zigg made mention of how much he liked the rocket ship pictured in my MB 16th birthday greeting.
The bank is from the 1950s and stands 10"H and is a variation on the 'pointy tube with fins' rocket design with the fins being quite long.

PS. From Arto:
As an addendum to my comment on Ed's fabulous post about the Foster Grant Rocket Bank, here's a snapshot of my Fosta bank along with two Tudor Rose variants (and friends). The red rocket bank is the one pictured in the seminal book on plastic space toys, Blast-Off!

One of my favourites Ed, so sleek, so Fifties!
ReplyDeleteTudor Rose issued its own British monochrome version of this rocket bank at least in two colours, red and gray.
Arto, you have got an amazing collection! Love those Tudor Rose versions - AWESOME!
DeleteThat is one of the most beautiful rocket designs I've ever seen. Very much influenced by the 1930s streamline design craze, it looks like it could have come from one of the Universal Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers serials. And the colors are perfect, influenced certainly by the pulp fiction art of Frank Paul and others. A stunning artifact - thanks for sharing! SFZ
ReplyDeleteThanx Zigg! Being a child of the '50s and '60s I am partial to those early rocket ship designs - as well as the Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon designs. Once we entered the Star Wars era with it's angular sharp-as-razor edged spaceships, a lot of that nostalgic look was thrown to the wayside.
DeleteAh, don't get me started on how Star Wars ruined everything! One of the reasons I love the Supermarionation shows (pre Space:1999) is their homage to the earlier futuristic design mythos. Stingray and Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet all borrowed heavily from the earlier streamlined design era. Being a child of the 50s and 60s, we were so lucky to have been able to enjoy all those fantastic Sci-Fi shows, with their "whiz-bang" vibe. And that rocket ship is just so perfectly fantastic, it makes me long for the past... SFZ
DeleteAnother great looking old toy. It just makes you think of Flash Gordon.
ReplyDeleteIt sure does Paul! I do love the Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon designs.
