Hi Woodsy
There just does not seem to be anything around in the way of Hound of the Baskervilles toys - not a Hellhound in sight. The only thing I came up with was a three-figure set by King & Country, consisting of Holmes with a revolver, Dr. Watson with a rifle, and the Hound.
King and Country is a modern maker of metal figures for collectors, based in Hong Kong. They are 1/30th scale, or a bit over the usual 54mm size, and come painted.
They do a number of Sherlock Holmes figures and sets, which are listed on their website under World of Dickens. Not the first place you would look.
Very high quality, but also very expensive. They are not toys.
Why did Aurora never make a kit of the monstrous Hound ? I have no idea - it would really have suited their Glow-in-the-Dark horror kit line.
Here is an old Moonbase Central post on the subject, from 2021.
It looks like you will have to make your own Hellhound, by re-painting an existing model or toy. Most toy dogs are just too friendly looking, but there is always a wolf or even a hyena.
Schleich do some large fantasy models, one of which I bought some time ago with the idea of doing a re-paint. I really must get around to that.

That is a very strange merchandising boo-boo! An Aurora figure set would have been almost expected at that point! I just wonder if it was the marketing people saying there's no interest, or maybe licensing this franchise was problematic? SFZ
ReplyDeleteYes, it's odd Aurora didn't do a Baskerville kit but then again how well known would it have been to their prime market, the kids of America. Aurora focused on Universal and the odd guest like Godzilla and Kong, all high-profile monsters. Baskerville is more Hammer Horror, dare I say more British. Too British?
ReplyDeleteLove those Dickens character figures Paul! Glad Bill Sykes is retired! He was a bad 'un! They need to retire Jack the Ripper too!
ReplyDeleteThere were the Basil Rathbone films of the 1930s and 1940s, starting with The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1939. Were they on US TV in the 1960s ?
ReplyDeleteThe closest Aurora came to a Hellhound was the Mad Dog included in Customizing Monster Kit No.2, in 1/8th scale, along with a Vulture. But that was a bit small compared to the other Aurora movie monsters, and it was never identified as the Hound of the Baskervilles.
I really must watch the Basil Rathbone film Paul. Thanks for the reminder. I do love those Aurora monster kits in all their variations. Could they be the best, most iconic kits ever made?
