The large red plastic racing car that Wotan spotted on eBay this week, and gave the heads up on has arrived at Scoop Studio.
It has no makers name, but luckily for me, Wotan's toy spotting skills came in very handy.
The toy is just a large red blown plastic racing car, but as Wotan pointed out it did appear in Stingray and Thunderbirds altered to look like a mini Submarine.
I intend to convert this example to World Navy Sub 27, as seen in the Stingray episode, 'The Man from the Navy', once I 've figured out how to do it!
Watch this space!
Thats great news, Scoop. I'm almost sure it was one of my first toys as a kid, which is how i spotted it so readily. Im tempted to say it was a Merit toy, but without consulting the catalogue hoard, I cant be sure. Great to see it will be repurposed into a new interpretation of an original prop. its in good hands! Will you be building the 100 gallon water tank in the garden? Bill
ReplyDeleteHa,ha! Cheers Bill. It's certainly a big toy, just under two foot long, and my water tank for model photos is around six foot, so I think I'll be going for close ups once I hopefully build the thing. :D
DeleteWell done. It's a massive toy and it'll look awesome when converted. Makes you realise just how big some of the models and sets were in the APF/Century 21 world.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot bigger than I imagined, Yorkie. Oddly enough I don't recall seeing it in the same shot as Stingray!
DeleteThis is going to be a very exciting project - I for one am waiting with bated breath! SF_Z
ReplyDeleteIt might take a little time to source all the additional bits, especially the Letraset which I'm still looking for to use on a couple of Hydromic missiles I've made. But, I'm optimistic, SF_Z
DeleteI think it's Poplar Plastics Scoop, pretty sure I have it in a trade catalogue somewhere, but it might be Lipkin or Tudor Rose, they share the same pages!

Hi Hugh, I think you're right about it being a Poplar Plastics toy. It's got a very small logo on the base with the letters PP .
DeleteIf "Just under two foot long" is 23 inches, then it's '1026 Ferrari 23" ', which was sold by the dozen at £4.80 with a suggested retail of 73p, so must be a 1969/70/71 list?
DeleteH
If one like it was used in Stingray, it would be at least the early sixties, Hugh.
DeleteTime to re-activate that World Navy Sub production line, eh Scoop !
ReplyDeleteHa,ha! Hopefully, Mish.:D
DeletePlenty of ESP prep/primer and fine steel wool on that blow moulded polythene before you attempt painting it!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the AP modelmakers approached that problem back in the day. No doubt they were under the gun to have a finished filming miniature ASAP!
Thanks for the tips, Lewis .
DeleteI don't suppose the APF modellers were overly concerned about the quality of the finish, as long as it looked okay on screen.
I have just found one in a clearance, how much are they worth?
