We end our Gorgo week with the most Famous of all Gorgo portraits, the one and only 1961 Famous Monsters of Filmland cover by the mega-talented Basil Gogos [1929 – 2017].
Does it get any better than this!
Between the cover artist talents of James Bama at Aurora and Basil Gogos at Famous Monsters the monster craze was a dead cert, especially with the late great Forry Ackerman kicking it all off.
Do you prefer Bama or Gogos?
Here's the Gorgo spread in Famous Monsters.
Gorgo certainly was big in the 1960s, especially in America. Yet in Britain no one under 16 was allowed to see the movie at all. Today it has gone from the X Certificate to a PG.
ReplyDeleteNow that’s a cover!
ReplyDeleteChoosing between Gogos and Bama is very unfair! They were both great artists, but different in style.
ReplyDeleteI met Forry Ackerman in the mid 80's, he bought me lunch, drove me around in his orange Cadillac and gave me the grand tour of the Ackermansion.
That was a GOOD day!
It is unfair I agree Looey. Can't believe you met Forry at the Ackermansion! I'm on the floor! How?
