I've often read about Filmation's Ghostbusters, the original TV show that made the more famous Ghostbuster's change it's toy range title to The 'Real' Ghostbusters.
The characters, like Mysteria below, remind me of a mash-up of the Groovie Ghoulies and Scooby Doo.
Oddly enough, I've never come across any of the Filmation toys, made by Schaper, anywhere but here they are as a group courtesy of Mr. Alan in the World of Toys on YT. I like them!
As for the Filmation TV show there appear to have been two versions, the live action show in 1975:
and the sequel, Filmation's cartoon series from 1986, made on the back of Colombia's success with the Bill Murray movie.
Here's every episode. That's 11 hours!
Seventies kids will have grown up with the Filmation live action TV series before seeing later the 1984 film and then when both cartoon series, Filmation's and Columbia's it must have been confusing for Eighties kids.
Did you see Fimation's live action and cartoon series readers? Anyone got any toys?
I'm old enough to have been around for the live action version and do recall watching it. It was somewhat cringey to me back then as I was a big fan of Storch and Tucker from their F Troop series. It seemed like a waste of their talents to me but now I realize they were going for what they could get on the downside of their careers. I was managing the toy department when the toys for the cartoon came out and they kind of sold but weren't flying off the shelves. I tried to watch the cartoon and there was too much repeated use of scenes/animation sequences for my tastes. It was a way of keeping costs down for Filmation who mainly did the show as a strike back at the movie as they felt they should have been given the rights for the animated series but had instead just taken a lump of cash for the rights to the name. By having their series out, it forced the movie based series to use The Real Ghostbusters as their name. Entertainment can be so petty at times.
ReplyDeleteAs for toys I have none and can't recall ever seeing any for the live action show.
Thanks for the memories and the legacy lives on.
DeleteI do not recall ever seeing the original live-action or cartoon shows - they may not have made it to NZ. I think the Real Ghostbusters were on later, but by then I was not in to watching cartoons much.

DeleteNever seen or heard of either of these Ghostbusters shows, nor seen any of their toys. They seem quite lame to be honest.

DeleteLoved the live-action Ghostbusters! Far better than that miserable 1984 feature film! SF_Z
ReplyDeleteWow, you saw it Zigg! I'd never heard of it until I wrote this post! I do recall a lovely ghost film one Christmas with Arthur Askey called the Ghost Train. I was about 11 at the time and watched it at home lead onmy tum with my face propped up in my palms! A very happy memory of a house and time now long gone.
