Lucky bags were just the bees knees when I was a nipper.
I loved that crinkly paper the bag was made of and the words Lucky Bag always brought a smile to my face.
I think they were crimped together along the top edge to keep them closed.
Inside was usually a small toy and some sweets. For some reason I'm seeing sugar coated almonds as one of the sweets but I maybe wrong.
No idea what the toys were now but I know I adored getting them.
Did you like lucky bags?
Yes! Lucky bags were a source of small toys (the other being Xmas crackers) that I always liked. The toys I remember included small puzzles, eg. a plastic dome with a ball bearing you had to get into a raised cup, a model camera/viewer with (very) odd pieces of film strip. I don't remember any space or military items, I wonder if the toys were chosen to try and appeal to both sexes.
ReplyDeleteWow, great meories Andy. I can almost see those toys now!
DeleteWhen I was a kid living in Richmond, my Grandfather used to walk over from Hounslow to see us on a Sunday morning. He always stopped at Lavelle's sweetshop and often bought a block of ice cream for Sunday Lunch. Regardless of that detail, he always brought me a JAMBOREE BAG or two...
ReplyDeleteI used to LOVE them! Sure, the Dolly Mixture was inedible, the toffees were filling pullers and the cracker style party hat and motto was pretty blah... But the plastic toys! I found an articulated plastic Gibbon that I played with for years and I even found not one, but two styrene plastic submarines that were loosely modelled on the Proteus from Fantastic Voyage!
The sense of anticipation was amazing and just once in a while, the little bit of plastic tat actually fulfilled the promise.
Here is a Blog that features the distinctive paper bag art.
The Blogger is fairly unkind, "the biggest anti-climax sweet collection out there..."
I beg to differ, for a few golden years they were the climax of my Sunday Mornings!

Super memories Looey! Another reader has sent me some memories of Jamborr Bags too. I love the idea of an articulated gibbon! Thanks for the link to the site, its a trove of sweets and choccy! Great read too. I also disagree about lucky bags like you, they were always welcome relief after a hard day at school.
