I watched Man of Steel and Justice League again this week. DC stuff is just ace.
I must admit I adore Man of Steel. I think its a masterpiece of filming. The global hope that Superman brings is palpable and maybe its because the last two years have been a covid nightmare I am noticeably susceptible to beacons of hope, even when they're on film.
Snyder, Cavill, Adams and company strike just the right tone to make this a serious bash at bringing Supe to life on screen. No high camp, no daft jokes. Its like entering a glorious Alex Ross painting.
And the score is just terrific; the snarling world-engine rev keeping us on our toes and the two-note Superman melody reminding us not to give up. Its just superb.
Justice League is good but not the icon that is MoS. Having said that I haven't seen the JL Director's Cut.
Absent here is Dawn of Justice, as its not on Netflix. I saw it several times last year though on Prime I think. It is without doubt one of the finest Super Hero films ever made and as Batman says in the first minute, it is a perfect thing.
What do you think readers?
Have you any DC toys and games?
I couldn't have put your words better myself, I am looking forward to Matt Reeves take on Batman too, but long live the Snyderverse, Hail Snyder!! Hail Snyder!! And so on and so on...
ReplyDeleteIs Affleck too old for his cape now MJ?
DeleteYep - a great set of films, with the addition of the first Wonder Woman film in the mix too. But what you really should do, is forget about the cinema release of Justice League. Watch Dawn of Justice again, then engage with the Snyder Cut of JL. I say engage, as its a four hour epic. Its as weighty as the batmobile and is discretely portioned into four separate parts. Where JL is a mish mash of ideas and events with the thinnest of storylines attempting to tack it together, Snydercut is the Dc answer to Infinity War/Endgame, in that it reveals the real baddie behind all the havoc, rather than the frontman Steppenwolf - a worthy foe in himself - but in a much meaner incarnation again in the Snydercut, who is carving a path for his god, Darkseid! Theres much, much more explanation and the whole film sits in the pantheon as a darker version of the MCU. No garish spandex here, but lots of action and supervillainy. If its available on dvd, id invest in it, as you will love it.
ReplyDeleteParting with hard cash is a painful experience I find!
DeleteI think the best thing about Justice League is Gail Gadot as Wonder Woman. She is the epitome of what the Amazon Princess should be. About a decade ago, I worked in pre-production on a film version of JL which was going to be directed by George Miller of Mad Max fame.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't happen, but Armee Hammer as Batman and Megan Gale as Wonder Woman wouldn't have been as good as what we eventually got!
Wow Looey! That's a bit of film history. I've never heard of that Miller version. there's quite a bit about it on the net too https://screenrant.com/justice-league-mortal-movie-batman-cowl-design-image/
