This game I saw on auction ages ago is not one I know. The Apollo Space Rocket Checker Game by Cardinal.
The box art on the other hand is that iconic earth moon figure of eight we see on lots of moonshot-inspired playthings from back in the late Sixties and early Seventies. I wonder who came up with it first?
I think it appeared on Wotan's Avon post the other day and I'm pretty sure its on the side of one of the bigger Triang Spacex toy boxes.
Do you know of any others where we get the moonshot 8?
It is on the Apollo 8 mission patch, which was the first manned orbit of the moon. That was 1968 but I don't know if that was the first use of it.
ReplyDeleteCheers Kev. I think that explains its use on games. Ta.
ReplyDeleteI found a remaindered Epoch? Game in the 70s called Operation Moonshot? It featured a big painting of a Mercury astronaut on the box front. The game board was two pressed tin hemispheres, one decorated as the Earth, the other the Moon. Linking them was a similar figure of 8 game path. The playing pieces were 3 stage landing modules (a little like Moon Zero Two) in red, blue, yellow and green plastic with a magnet between the legs so they could stick to the planets.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what happened to it and Mr.Google has been supremely unhelpful in supplying any evidence that it actually existed outside of my memories...
I've had an initial scout round for this game Looey but no joy yet. There's lots of old games called Moonshot so its a busy field. I'll dig as bit more.
