Hello Woodsy
In going through boxes I can across a program for the NY1976 Comic Art Convention.
Attached is a scan of the inside front cover. It's from Marvel and mentions Logan's Run, Star Wars and Forbidden Planet.
Might be of interest to your readers.

That page is from Kirby's adaptation of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which I have tucked away somewhere.
ReplyDeleteCheers Kid. You have one vast collection!
DeleteShucks, Woodsy, you say the nicest things - and I have to not-so-modestly agree with you.
DeleteThats a bit early for Star Wars, must have been a pre-release thing for the Marvel adaptation
ReplyDeleteComic cons back then would have been completely different from what we have now,is this a con you went to?- MJ
ReplyDeleteThis was a convention I went to. It was organised by Phil Seuling who was the person who set up comic distribution to speciality shops as opposed to news stands which improved comic distribution as dealers could be sure of getting titles they ordered.
ReplyDeleteIt was comics, not TV and movie and no Role Playing Costume wearing. Note the ad mentions Forbidden Planet as a Marvel comic title. Did anyone ever see that comic?
The convention was less than a year before the first Star Wars movie release.
Marvel certainly did Logan's Run & Star Wars Specials and monthly mags, but I don't recall ever seeing a Forbidden Planet one. Marvel got the agreement to do a Star Wars adaptation before the release of the movie, and it's often said that the mag saved Marvel from going out of business. That's not fan talk, that comes from Jim Shooter himself and other Marvel luminaries.
DeleteYep no custom made cosplay costumes made for $2000! I attended a con in London in 1990 and the only cosplay was a costume parade for an hour, the most inventive was an entirely paper sheath with the dotted line drawing of sue Richards as the invisible girl, the fella just shuffled onto the stage and brought the house down!! Of course I was dressed as Batman, all entirely hand made, I also got to chat with Norm Breyfogle the following day! Good times - MJ
