Hi Woodsy,
Thanks to the toy mad Laura Legends, I have just discovered that there is a female equivalent of the Man Cave.
It is the Babe Cave according to this video clip.
According to Lindsey Amrani, Editor of Model Collector magazine, model Batmobiles should be kept in a Batcave.
Are there any other sorts of caves inhabited by collectors ?

Superman's Fortress of Solitude is a sort of cave Paul. I think it was released as a toy too. The Batcave has been released loads of times. My fave batcave is the 1989 Keaton cave. Driving his batmobile through the dead leaves towards it is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYes, many secret lairs are indeed caves. But I was thinking specifically of places for collectors and their collections - the Man Cave and Babe Cave, and wondered if there were any other terms for such a retreat from the outside world ?
ReplyDeleteSheds are a big deal here Paul. In NZ too?. People do allsorts in sheds - collections, displays, cinemas, bars, you name it - and there's whole books on the subject. Our two sheds are full of tools and a lawnmower and car boot stock. I used to have a cellar in my last house which became my old toys stock room and then a old toy shop! I actually had customers who came round and walked round the cellar buying old toys! I loved that cellar and miss those pre-internet vintage toy days.
ReplyDeleteSheds are big in NZ too - there are books and magazines devoted to what you can do in them. Never had a nice shed, just the sort for the lawnmower and a pile of firewood. As I now live in a flat, there is no shed. Cellars and basements, or attics, are not as common in NZ as they seem to be in Britain or America, where everyone seems to have one or both. Your toy cellar sounds like fun
ReplyDeleteI've lived in 3 flats in my life so far Paul. Once when I was 17 for a couple of years circa 1978. Once with my girlfriend in Europe circa 1981, again for a couple of years the last time was with my small family circa 1987 in Europe. That may have just been a year. I enjoyed all three experiences. There may nit have been stairs inside the flats but there was always a climb to get to them! I wonder a flat becomes an apartment?
ReplyDelete.... I meant when a flat becomes an apartment! doh!
ReplyDeleteI lived on the 9th floor of a tower block for a short while when I was a kid, I liked it!
ReplyDeleteDid you have to climb or was there a lift Kev? If you can recall.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lift, I don't remember there ever being a problem with it, I was probably only about 6.
ReplyDeleteThe term Flat came about in the UK during the Edwardian era when instead of houses buildings containing multiple dwellings were built. Instead of a two or more story house your home was on 'the flat', just on one level. The home could be one or more bedrooms and multistory buildings usually stacked the same size home one above the other. Later large houses were sub divided from one family homes to one home per floor, thereby becoming flats. In the US apartments were the term used as multiple dwellings buildings were purpose built. In the UK 'apartments' was used when commercial space was converted into domestic residences.
ReplyDeleteVery informative Terran. Thanks.
