Missus Moonbase and I have been celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary this weekend. We went to the brilliant York Car boot sale to start us off in the sweltering summer heat. If you like antiques its the boot fair to die for. Its also pretty darn good for toys and everything else as well!
I didn't buy any toys. We got a few books but the toys I noticed were as follows [pictures off old auctions on the net]:
Codeg Toy Town Telephone Exchange - a beautiful toy close up and technology that will one day be forgotten.
Geoda Walkie Talkies. I loved the psychedelic box art.
Super Soccer - unsure of the makers - its a sort of magnetic table soccer. I've bought and sold one but not in this huge box with the ace cover art.
Airfix Junior Driver - I'm pretty sure I had a very early version of this as a kid in the back of my Dad's car! The example at York was carded like this and in a clear bag.
The Fastest Gun with its fantastic box art. A Denys Fisher 3D gem and one I may still have in the attic.
Not a toy at all, I just loved this little metal paper-knife shaped like a sword. It has the word TOLEDO on the blade top, the famed Italian home of sword smithing. I couldn't help thinking whether the hilt would fit into Action Man's hand! A knight or musketeer would have made a great outfit for Palitoy's fighting man don't you think?
There was tons more but I can't recall any more individual items. Doh!
The sword letter openers won't really fit into an AM/GIJ hands. The grip is too thick and the whole thing is more around 1/4 scale not 1/6. Plus it is heavy for an action figure to hold, unless you like the tip always in the ground. I've owned a few over the years and always was a bit miffed that they were a bit oversized.
ReplyDeleteThere are newer ones that are smaller and would work though (LotR, some samurai sets).
Thanks lance. Great insights. I suppose accy man / gij had a sword withe ceremonial military sets like west point and life guard. I loved my life guard.
DeleteLooking at those toys, the York car boot is my idea of a heavenly hunting ground!
ReplyDeleteWishing you and Missus Moonbase a fantastic 34th anniversary weekend, Woodsy.
All the best, Tone
Thanks Tone. York is a gem amongst car boots. Very little tat and tons of vintage stuff. Not cheap but fab to be at. Cheers.
DeleteHi Woodsy!
ReplyDeleteEhr.. the Toledo swords were Spanish, not Italian... ;-)

Thanks SR, I often need nudging in the right direction!
DeleteSo you got to do your car boot sale rounds too, Woodsy! It's been the Antiques Super Weekend here, taking us to the four corners of Finland in a matter of days. In a beautiful weather to boot!
ReplyDeleteThe four corners of Finland! I love that line Arto! An antiques road trip! Sounds really exciting!
