Now that is a toy I've never seen before Brian! In fact I hadn't seen the rat bat spider until reader Lance mentioned it to me recently! What a creation. Would you say its a Kaiju?
I call most any giant monster a Kaiju, but I think Kaiju is meant to be a giant monster of Japanese origin. This toy was made by the M1 company of Japan and is part of the Club Daikaiju line which also includes Reptilicus and Gorgo.A shout out to Jersey guy Jim Cirronella, founder of Club Daikaiju,is in order here.He approached M1 and helped to make these great toys a reality.Although the online store Club Dakaiju is no more, these toys remain as a legacy.
yes, I agree that kaiju fits all big monsters. Feels kinds cool calling Kong a kaiju! Yep, Jim Cirronella did a great job on the Rat Bat Spider, it looks great. His Reptilicus and Gorgo sound great! Have you got those too? How come there is such a strong Kaiju community in Jersey?
My guess is this. The Eastern seaboard of the United States was one famous for it's many Drive in theatres and that is how the Kaiju movies reached the public here.Drive ins were notorious for selecting obscure movies that were less popular than the first run Hollywood movies.I do have a Club Daikaiju Gorgo/Gorgo's Mom set.It is an unpainted set in a flesh pink color that was a convention exclusive.I'll send a pic.
got the pics thanks Bri. I love your explanation of the Kaiju Drive-In Seaboard! I've actually visited one of those drive-ins - it was a flea market during the day and I bought a stack of Gi Joes and a Marx Fort Apache! I'm surprised that Gorgo is popular in the States. Its quite a quaint Cornish monster really and not that well known outsode of monster film fans I don't think. Did they ever make a toy version of Konga?
Sort of.Marusan made a generic "Giant Gorilla" in standard scale that can be Kong,Konga Kogar,or Magilla Gorilla depending on the imagination of the purchaser.Comes in a few different colors.
