What do you think about the old TV series Sesame Street?
I remember seeing it Saturday mornings way back in the Sixties and Seventies. For all I know it may have lasted longer. I think my Daughter watched it in the 80's!
I can hear the words now 'made by Childrens Television Workshop' or something like that.
The Count, Big Bird, the grouch in the dustbin, ernie and bert [or were they Muppets?] and many more: they were all there in the background whilst I was growing up.
The odd thing is that I wound't say that Sesame Street was an important part of my TV viewing back then or at least that's how it seems now looking back. It was more incidental.
I may just be saying this because for some reason my brain relegates old educational TV shows below the true adventure programmes like Thunderbirds and Saturday cartoons.
Play Away, Play School and the like are all relegated this way, which is a disservice to them I'm sure.
What do you think readers? Was Seasame Street and its ilk important to you?
Count Dracula wants your numbers! Clever character that for kids, the Count!
ReplyDeleteSesame Street has remained on television to this day. There was a lot of controversy last year when the show moved from free public television to the premium channel HBO, potentially taking it away from the low income households with children who may need more help and encouragement with reading. But the show is definitely still around!
ReplyDeleteI saw Sesame Street even before the first episode aired! The night before it made its debut, there was a special to introduce the show to parents and reassure them it was good for their children. Besides the Muppets it had great animated segments, and even guest appearances by Superman and Batman:

I can't believe they could sell it to a Premium channel Richard. Sesame Street is a public service show like you say. I'm thrilled its still around. I had no idea that batman and Superman appeared, sounds great! My Wife saw a completely different version of the Street in Europe in the Sixties. I wonder how many versions there were? A brilliant show.
