Slippers are a strange thing.
At once symbols of advancing decrepitude as we shuffle towards certain oblivion or snug heralds of a comfortable evening sipping Calvados by the warm hearth.
I just can't remember if I had any slippers when I was a kid. If I didn't then I don't know what I wore in my parent's house. Maybe I just wore shoes or perhaps ran around in my salty socks.
I can imagine that some slippers were emblazoned with TV stars but the memory eludes me.
I'm still not keen on slippers these days - like idle trilobites they are still irritating reminders of my inevitable slow down - but I have a feeling they have gained in popularity in the UK as people have discovered the exquisite laziness of wearing them with pajama bottoms around the home.
I prefer sandals [with no socks!]
Do you wear slippers readers and did you as a kid?
Yep, I wore slippers as a kid, Woodsy. Then came decades of slipper denial and dislike. However, a couple of years back I got a pair for Christmas. These days, I've embraced the cosy dozy comfort of slippers. I've three pairs which I alternate. I quite like trudging around the house in 'em. They're oversized, dorky, and built for slow moving inactivity. An unstylish style statement which I wear with rebellious confidence, knowing they match my other mismatched telly-watching togs... they also keep my delicate feet nice and warm in the winter :D
ReplyDeleteRight, from now on you will be known as Tony Three Pairs! you've sold it to me. I shall seek out my slippers and wear them!
DeleteI wear boots a good deal outside, so slippers are a lightweight way of keeping my feet warm indoors. Not as good a reply as Tony's I'm afraid!
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of old gardening shoes I like to wear outside Andy. I like them so much I keep them on in the house!
DeleteI think your reply is every but as good as mine, Andy... and I'm reassured to know I'm not the only one confessing to wearing slipper. Thanks for owning up as well, ha ha :)
ReplyDeleteMe too. I have both slippers and canvas slip-ons for indoors. As a kid I think it was to keep the carpet clean back in the days before central heating and you couldn't really walk around in your socks or bare feet then. Mum would have played heck if anyone got dirt on the carpet. It's sort of stuck with me.
ReplyDeleteHmm, that rings a bell about carpets Yorkie. They were all axminster and shagpile back then. Those canvas slip-ons you have remind me of the kung fu slippers I adored in the early seventies, the sort that Bruce Lee wore. To be honest though the plastic soles weren't that comfortable. They clattered when you walked on Lino too!
