This weekend we caught the old movie Futureworld, which I found in my VHS collection. Futureworld is the sequel to Westworld.
With no involvement from writer Michael Crichton and only a passing cameo from Yul Brynner, Futureworld was a final big screen jerk of the story arc's rusty servos as it once more lifted the lid on Delos.
Not content to have the robots simply run amok in the wild west and the Middle Ages, this film nurtured a much grander conspiracy at its wired heart, namely the replacement of the world's most important people with Delos androids, a sort of Stepford Occupation.
Watching Futureworld you just don't know who is of this Earth or who's from the tool shed. In this sense it's like the horror flick Dead and Buried with it's final and startling reveal.
With the new series of Westworld on TV bringing Wired Earps and Bot Mastersons to a fresh savvy audience, it seems a useful time to watch the vintage Futureworld and indeed the original Westworld film.
I wonder if any of them generated any toys and games?
All that remains for me to do now is catch the old TV series spawned from these two films called Beyond Westworld.
Has anyone seen this old TV series or Futureworld?
Im a huge fan of the new HBO outing and watched the original Westworld the other day, which was pretty limp by comparison. It also showed where Cameron got the idea for the end sequence of Terminator. Futureworld was a flimsy attempt to extend the franchise and capitalise on the robots take over the world fear. The TV series has flagged up online somewhere, but im not sure id have the patience to sit through it.
ReplyDeleteNo patience? You'll never make a Doctor Bill! I'll try to track down that old TV series and let you know.
