Personally I think it looks great. The action figure Tracy boys look fine piloting their respective craft and I 'm looking forward to seeing a full episode.
The animation using models and computers looks excellent, a far cry from the usual CGI fare which, to be honest I've never been that keen on.
And for us older fans there's plenty of nods to the past, most obviously the late Peter Dyneley doing the Thunderbird countdown. But one thing that convinces me that the producers have got that essential understanding of what Thunderbirds was all about is the simple image of a helping hand.
Thunderbirds are definitely Go!
Looks really excellent Scoop and like you I love the nods to the past. Can't wait to see it. Will it Saturday evening viewing like Dr. Who do you think?
ReplyDeleteUtterly convincing I must say. Seems to be the best thing that happened to the TB brand after its initial run.
ReplyDeleteThe deep sea vehicle (at 22 secs.) even has "Eagle eyes" (as in Space: 1999)!
If the whole episodes are this interesting, I say we've got an awesome show to watch. Still not overly keen on TB5 but the rest of it makes up for it.
ReplyDeleteI must say, it looks horribly cartoony to me. I don't see the model work, it looks like CGI, which is never convincing.
ReplyDeleteOnly one reservation: what people often overlook about animated or puppet-based productions -- sometimes including the makers of those productions! -- is that the voices can make or break them. It doesn't matter how good the model work or character designs or effects are. It's always the voices that sell it. Sometimes visually beautiful stuff has bombed because the voices were wrong. Other times, some weak animation has become a huge hit because the voice actors were so great.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that bugs me about this teaser is that the voices in the first 18 seconds were really lame. I know they probably don't reflect anything in the actual production, and I know some really great talents are working on the show. If the cast as a whole is up to that level, the show will work. But I have to hear it before I can tell.
I'm obviously in a minority, I don't like the figures with the haircuts that look like plasticene, don't really think the designs of the craft needed updating, and in this trailer at least, feel the action is far too fast for the "short attention span" generation.
ReplyDeleteA am evidently in a minority, but don't like the figures with their "plasticene" hair, don't think the designs of the craft really needed updating, and in this trailer at least, feel the action is too fast, -for a "short attention span" generation?
ReplyDeleteSorry didn't intend to repeat myself, computer glitch!
ReplyDeleteYes, but it had twice the impact Andy! ha ha. I suppose "reanimating" Thunderbirds was always going to be tricky. They have to please old fans like us and much more importantly for them I would have thought, grab a whole new generation. Like you say, short attention spans but also computer savvy and socially networked. I wonder if Thunderbirds will be their cup of tea? How old were we when we saw it first time round? 6 or 7?
ReplyDeleteThis new Thunderbirds is obviously for a new generation, that's the target audience. We had ours in the sixties. Original fans will generally compare the two series disapprovingly , but things have moved on . The awful Frakes film got it totally wrong, missing out the essential essence of what Thunderbirds was about. From what little I've seen of this TV reboot leads me to think that the producers have tried hard to retain that essence, and that has got to be good for the younger viewers who will hopefully make it a success.
