This is the Zeroid Alien, the Invader from Outer Space with
the computer brain.
Released by Ideal in
1970, this was a radical departure from the usual robot designs.
It’s a curious looking toy, and quite a bit different
internally to the regular Zeroid. The quick change ‘Motorific’ electric motor is set within
the casing, and only accessible if the Alien is taken apart.
On the original Zeroids, the motor simply powered forward
and reverse movement. On the Alien the motor also turns the removable cams
which are used to programme the actions of the toy.
There are four cams – Search, Patrol, Sentry and Self
Destruct!
Here’s a short film showing the self-destruct capabilities.
The plastic head has to take a few knocks as it springs from the Alien's body which might, in some way explain why there were three subtle variations.
This is the one on my version.
This one has no plastic strengtheners supporting the clear dome, so I'd imagine it would be prone to cracking.
This one has the strengtheners, with the addition of coloured sections around the rim.
The box artwork.
The Alien in comparison to the 'usual' Zeriod. The Alien's rubber arms make it just a tad wider. I found it makes it a bit tricky to get out of the ZEM accessory with ease.
All in all, though I do like this fun variation on a theme, and I reckon it's a nice addition to the Zeroid range.
Loving the Alien plus the video - just the way I feel every morning!
ReplyDeleteHa, ha! Nice one Arto. I'm generally like that after a couple of sherbets in the pub!
