Holy Grails are the stuff of dreams. By their very nature they are almost always unattainable. Their scarcity makes them irresistible but most of us will never own them. So why do we think about Holy Grails?
Collectors of Project SWORD have a hard time of it here. We agree that the Moon Base Base Play Set is the Holy Grail, tantalisingly described in the pink manual [below] but beyond a couple of shop displays, does it actually exist? Does this add to its desirability or is it a waste of time to yearn after it?
There are Holy Grails in every area of collecting: childhood collections, comics, space toys, books, films and so on. They may be entirely personal to you rather than being the rarest of objects. What is your Holy Grail and why?
Well I have been uncommonly lucky in being presented with the nuclear ferry, which is as rare as hens teeth. Next to that would be the Spacex Salvage craft, crash tender and photonic space station. Id leave the moonbase for woodsy! Then theres the hamilton invaders mosquito jeep, which id like for the old cricket collection. Then there are many other lesser toys which are desirable, but generally unnatainable. But thanks to the bottomless generosity of friends, ive managed to find loads of fantastic toys over the last five years
ReplyDeleteFor many years now I have been collecting plastic buildings and accessories for Marx 3-rail O-gauge trains. There were several items which were really tough to find but the toughest of the lot has been Marx's plastic barracks complete with box and all the soldiers that went with it. To this day I am missing the box and at least two or three of those soldiers. Back in 2009 I had made available for free download the 'Pictorial Guide to Marx Plastic Accessories' a 600+ page catalog of accessories, but as comprehensive as it is, it still feels empty - incomplete because of those missing pieces.
